The Jacksonville Jaguars opened their season with a clear identity—one that first-year head coach Liam Coen has been hammering since the spring. Toughness wasn’t just a word on the whiteboard during offseason meetings; it showed up on the field in Week 1. From physical play on both sides of the ball to the confidence to convert on key downs, Coen’s blueprint was evident in the Jaguars’ performance.
A Mentality That Shows Up in Big Moments
Liam Coen has been consistent in his message: toughness must define everything the Jaguars do. That doesn’t only mean highlight-reel hits or punishing runs—it’s also about showing resilience when the game tightens. Jacksonville’s defense embodied that mantra when the offense slowed down, forcing turnovers and holding its ground.
“Yeah, it definitely showed up,” Coen said on Monday. “It’s nice to know that a lot of the things we’ve been preaching since we arrived did show up yesterday. Was it perfect by any means? No. But to start Week 1 off physically the way we did, now it gives us a great opportunity to continue to coach hard and to fix some of the issues we had. But when you can start there and say this is going to be a part of our DNA, for it to show up in Week 1 matters.”
For Coen, toughness is about creating a standard his players can see on film. The value is not just in winning downs—it’s in reinforcing why the team buys into the process. When players see that effort translates into stops, turnovers, and conversions, the message gains staying power.
That belief was most evident on a critical fourth-down call early in the game. Instead of punting, Coen leaned into his philosophy and put the ball in his players’ hands.
“It was eerily similar to the Pittsburgh preseason game,” Coen explained on Monday. “I kind of asked the guys real quick what we thought, and it was very clear from everybody—it’s a go zone. Data and analytics said it was a high percentage. I had confidence in the call, and the guys executed.”
The play didn’t just extend the drive—it cemented the mindset. For Jacksonville, toughness means trusting preparation and executing under pressure.
Setting the Tone Through Physicality
The Jaguars’ toughness wasn’t limited to their head coach’s decision-making. It showed up in the way players attacked the game, particularly tight end Brenton Strange.
“He was physical in the run game, explosive with the ball in his hands, and made a couple of good catches,” Coen said on Monday. “His ability to either block at the point of attack or slice across the formation—he plays violently. He helps set the tone for our offense. Everyone has seen it all training camp, and it carried over into Sunday.”
Coen has no interest in being cautious in Year One. From embracing aggressive fourth-down calls to praising players who set a physical standard, he is building a foundation rooted in toughness. It’s not about sending a message—it’s about establishing an identity the Jaguars can carry through the season.
And in Week 1, that identity was clear.
