The Detroit Red Wings are shopping Vladimir Tarasenko, and one trade pitch has them dealing him to a Western Conference Team in a one-for-one swap.
Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Red Wings trade Tarasenko to the Edmonton Oilers for another forward in a cap dump.
Red Wings acquire:
Oilers acquire:
- Vladimir Tarasenko ($750k retain)
The one-for-one trade makes sense as both forwards have been mentioned as trade candidates this offseason, and a change of scenery makes sense. Tarasenko would add some secondary scoring to the Oilers’ lineup. Arvidsson, meanwhile, would be given a fresh start with the Red Wings.
Detroit would acquire Arvidsson, who has one year left on his two-year, $8 million deal. His first with the Oilers didn’t pan out, and he was scratched at times in the playoffs, leaving him to be a trade candidate. Arvidsson recorded 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points in 67 games. He added 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points in 15 games.
In return, the Red Wings would trade Tarasenko and retain $750,000 to make him and Arvidsson make the same amount next season. The Russian has one year left on his two-year, $9.5 million deal. But he struggled in his first year in Detroit. Tarasenko didn’t find his spot in the lineup as he recorded just 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points in 80 games. He has won two Stanley Cups and would bring some leadership to the Oilers’ roster.
Red Wings GM Confident Tarasenko Will be Better
Despite Tarasenko’s name coming up in trade rumors, the Red Wings still have confidence in the veteran forward.
After the season ended, Red Wings’ general manager Steve Yzerman spoke to the media and claimed Tarasenko would be better next season.
“I think (Tarasenko’s) play was probably better than his production,” Yzerman said. “I would say he was frustrated not being able to produce. And, I think that affected his attitude and affected his play…
“You try to reassure him that you’re doing a lot of good things out there and don’t let the missed chances or the inability to score affect your play,” Yzerman added. “I’m hopeful and expecting him to give us more than he did this year because I know we can. I believe he can give us more than what he showed this year. ”
If Detroit doesn’t trade Tarasenko, the Russian forward will likely be a top-six forward. But, all signs point to the Red Wings looking to trade the two-time Cup champ.
Oilers Shopping Arvidsson
Edmonton has lost in the Stanley Cup Finals in back-to-back seasons. With that, the Oilers are looking to shake up their roster.
One person who is likely to be traded is Arvidsson. The Swede didn’t fit in as Edmonton had hoped. NHL insider Frank Seravalli linked the Oilers to trading the forward.
“Maybe this is one of those situations where it is mutually beneficial to move on. The Oilers will undoubtedly be trying to move Arvidsson, who became a spare part in the postseason. At a salary cap hit for next season that throws their books out of whack. But maybe heading into another contract year, it’s also better for Arvidsson to go to a place where he’ll get more opportunity,” Seravalli wrote.
Arvidsson has appeared in 613 career NHL games.
