Trade Idea Sees Maple Leafs Adding $11.8M Forward in Cap Dump Swap

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking to trade Calle Jarnkrok, and one trade idea has them making a swap for another cap dump.

Heavy.com has a trade idea that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Mathieu Joseph from the St. Louis Blues in an intriguing move.

Maple Leafs acquire:

Blues acquire:

Toronto would acquire Joseph, who’s a speedy bottom-six winger, while the Blues take a flier on Jarnkrok and also get a late-round pick in the swap.

The Maple Leafs would acquire Joseph to be a bottom-six forward and add some speed to the lineup. Joseph is entering the final year of his four-year, $11.8 million deal. He can play left or right wing, which gives Craig Berube some flexibility. Joseph recorded 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 60 games. He would also add some winning pedigree to the lineup as won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.

In return, the Maple Leafs would give up a late-round pick as well as Jarnkrok in a swap of forwards who could be used as cap dumps. Jarnkrok is in the final year of his four-year, $8.4 million deal. Jarnkrok dealt with injuries last season, but would be a middle-six forward for the Blues. He recorded 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 19 games.

Maple Leafs Have Been Trying to Trade Jarnkrok

Toronto has been looking to trade Jarnkrok this offseason, but so far, no deal has happened.

Jarnkrok’s role with the team has been diminished, and the Maple Leafs have been trying to get out of the final year of his deal. However, NHL insider David Pagnotta reports that the Maple Leafs haven’t been getting much trade interest in him.

“As the Leafs try to shed salary and create roster space for other moves, Jarnkrok joins Kampf and Robertson on the Summer Trade Watch List,” Pagnotta wrote. “He has a $2.1M cap hit and owns a 10-team no-trade list. The market hasn’t been vibrant, to this point, but the Leafs will continue to dangle him.”

Jarnkrok can play up and down the lineup, which could entice teams to take a flier on him, as he can take top-six minutes if needed. However, with all the additions Toronto made to the bottom-six, he could be dealt as his role isn’t as set this season.

Jarnkrok Dealt With An Injury Last Season

Jarnkrok had a frustrating last season due to an injury in training camp.

The 33-year-old didn’t make his season debut until April 20 due to the injury, which took longer than expected to heal. Once he did return, Jarnkrok admitted it took a bit to get his feet underneath him.

“It took a while to get going. Timing a little off, thought it got a little better as the game went on,” Jarnkrok said. “It’s usually one game, and then you’re kind of back in it. But you just got to get that first one out of the way.”

Jarnkrok skated in 12 playoff games, recording 1 assist.
