Trade Pitch Brings Eagles Former No. 4 Overall Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts each have diminishing aspects on their roster, although for wildly different reasons.

The Eagles have a diminishing asset in backup quarterback and 2023 sixth round pick (No. 188 overall) Tanner McKee because he only has one year left on hiis 4-year, $4.02 million rookie contract. If the Eagles don’t trade him now, they’ll get nothing back for a player a handful of NFL teams probably look at as a starter in 2026.

The Colts have a diminishing asset in back quarterback and 2023 first round pick (No. 4 overall) Anthony Richardson because he’s crashed and burned over and over again through his first 3 NFL seasons, losing his starting job multiple times — including this year to Daniel Jones — before he fractured his orbital bone in pre-game warmups on October 13.

The difference between the 2 could mean a lucrative windfall for the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles.

Heavy Trade Pitch Brings Richardson to Philly

Heavy.com’s Max Dible has a trade pitch where the Eagles get Richardson and a late-round pick in exchange for McKee, who could be a fill-in starter for the Colts as Jones recovers from a torn Achilles tendon suffered late in the 2025 season.

“With Daniel Jones out until at least the middle of next season and Anthony Richardson’s future uncertain, the Colts have turned to Phillip Rivers, now almost five years removed from his last NFL snap,” Dible said. “Richardson is a potential trade chip and isn’t likely to be back in Indy beyond the final year of his rookie deal in 2026. Rivers is in his mid 40s, and while pro athletes have shown a new resiliency to Achilles tears, they usually don’t come back as the same player once their year or so of rehab is complete. That might leave the Colts with just Riley Leonard and/or a hobbled or lesser version of Jones next season. If not, it leaves them with Richardson, who is a player they’ve already indicated they don’t want to employ long-term. The Eagles could potentially swap Tanner McKee for Anthony Richardson and a Day 3 pick if they think Richardson could have a future. If not, Philly and the Eagles could reach an agreement on a second- or third-rounder, which puts a meaningful pick in Philadelphia’s pocket and give the Colts a viable starter in 2026, and potentially well beyond.”

Eagles Might Have Choice of Suitors

The truth is there are quite a few teams who might want McKee as their Plan B/Temporary Plan A in 2026 — enough that the Eagles might start a bidding war over McKee.

Leading the way of those teams, and the team probably the most desperate to keep the ship afloat, might be the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs lost 2-time NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL in Week 16 and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Getting McKee, 6-foot-6 and 231 pounds, has shown a lot of promise as a passer in his first 3 seasons with the Eagles, including going 30-of-45 passing for 343 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions in one start plus one quarter in 2024 when Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts was in concussion protocol.
