The New York Yankees have a need in the rotation, and the team could look to acquire an All-Star in a blockbuster.
MLB analyst Alexander Wilson of EmpireSportsMedia shared a trade idea that sees the Yankees acquiring Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers. Wilson’s framework of a trade is as follows:
Yankees acquire:
- Freddy Peralta
Brewers acquire:
- Luis Gil or Will Warren
- Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez
- Other prospects
The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as the Yankees would go all-in by acquiring Peralta to strengthen the rotation. The price to pay would be tough as Gil and Warren are both in the rotation, but Jones or Dominguez are the stars of the package, as whoever moves can be an everyday outfielder for Milwaukee.
New York would acquire Peralta, whose name has come up in trade talks due to this being the final year of control. Peralta is a two-time MLB All-Star and a one-time NL wins leader. Last season, the right-hander went 17-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 33 starts last season.
Peralta would be a front-of-the-rotation arm for the Yankees, joining Max Fried. Then, once Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return, those four would create one of, if not the best, rotations in all of baseball.
Analyst Explains Yankees Acquiring Peralta
Peralta is one of the top starters in the MLB, and the price to acquire him would be high.
In the proposed deal, the Yankees’ package would feature Gil or Warren, and then Dominguez or Jones, as well as other minor prospects.
Of course, landing a pitcher of Peralta’s caliber will require a painful exit of young talent.
“Once the lineup is secured, I expect Cashman to aggressively pivot to the rotation by targeting Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta,” Wilson wrote. “… I anticipate the package will center around a young MLB-ready arm like Will Warren or potentially even Luis Gil. Along with a bundle of prospects (potentially including Spencer Jones/or even Jasson Dominguez) to replenish Milwaukee’s system.
“It is a steep price to pay, but for a Yankees team that is firmly in “win-now” mode, hoarding prospects while the championship window is open is malpractice. These two moves—locking in Bellinger and trading for Peralta—transform a quiet winter into a terrifying spring for the rest of the AL East.”
It would be a win-now move, which is what the Yankees likely need to do as their division rivals in the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Tampa Bay Rays have all gotten better.
Aaron Boone Likes New York’s Roster
Although the Yankees have had a quiet offseason, manager Aaron Boone likes the roster.
Boone believes the team is good, but knows the roster likely isn’t set, and won’t be set even once spring training begins.
“I know we have a really good team right now,” Boone said. “We have a lot of really good players on our roster. It’s probably not finished. There will be some tweaks up until spring training. It takes more than just us to tango.
“It takes other clubs, obviously free agents and the opportunities they have in front of them. However it lands, my expectation is we’re going to be really good. And, that’s how we’ll prepare.”
The Yankees have the second-best odds of winning the World Series at +750.
