The Detroit Red Wings could look to upgrade their defense, and one trade pitch has them acquiring a solid defenseman.
Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Red Wings acquire Mario Ferraro from the San Jose Sharks in an intriguing deal.
Red Wings acquire:
Sharks acquire:
- Shai Buium
- 2026 second-round pick
- 2027 third-round pick
The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Detroit would acquire a star defenseman in the final year of his deal for a defensive prospect and two early draft picks.
Detroit would acquire Ferraro, who’s entering the final year of his four-year, $13 million deal with the Sharks. Ferraro would be a good second-pairing defenseman for the Red Wings who can play a shutdown role. The 26-year-old could also add some offense to the back end, as last season, he recorded 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points. But he’s more of a shutdown defenseman who can play physical.
In return, Detroit would trade two draft picks as well as a defensive prospect in Buium. Buium is the older brother of Minnesota Wild star young defenseman Zeevn Buium. Shai is 22 and could replace Ferraro on the Sharks’ blue line this season and make his NHL debut. He played in the AHL last season, recording 2 goals and 23 assists for 25 points in 67 games.
Ferraro Could be Expendable for the Sharks
San Jose could look to trade Ferraro after the team added three veteran defenseman in the offseason.
The Sharks signed Dmitry Orlov to a two-year deal worth $6.5 million per season, and also inked veteran defenseman John Klingberg to a one-year, $4 million deal. Then, San Jose claimed Nick Leddy off waivers, as he has one year left, earning $4 million.
“Dmitry is a strong, two-way defenseman who brings physicality and versatility on the ice,” said Sharks GM Mike Grier of signing Orlov. “He has a wealth of NHL experience, both in the regular season and playoffs, and his Stanley Cup championship pedigree is a valuable addition to our team. We are happy to have him.”
The Sharks now have eight NHL defensemen under contract, with Jack Thompson as a pending RFA. With that, San Jose could look to trade Ferraro, who’s in the final year of his deal, as the Sharks would likely get quite a bit for him.
Red Wings Exploring Trade Market
Detroit has had a relatively quiet offseason, outside of trading for John Gibson to be their starting goalie.
The Red Wings needed to find a true No. 1 goalie and bolster the blue line, which the latter they have yet to do so. Yet, Red Wings’ general manager Steve Yzerman says the team is exploring the trade market to add to its roster.
“Anybody can go and look at the list of the potential free agents and see there aren’t that many guys you would think will have an impact,” Yzerman said. “There are very few this year, for whatever reason…
“It’s just there aren’t a lot of options right now,” Yzerman added. “Everybody wants, the teams I’m talking to, they want players. Just like we want players. What do we have to offer? I don’t want to trade our core players. You’re looking to add to your team, (using) future assets for that. Right now teams are all looking to add players to their teams. Kind of the same thing we’re trying to do.”
The Red Wings currently have just over $12 million in cap space.
