The proposed deal would be a blockbuster, as Detroit would acquire Robertson for two prospects and two first-round picks. Dallas would be able to reset with the assets and could use them as trade chips, while Detroit would acquire a star first-line forward.

The Red Wings would acquire Robertson, who’s in the fourth year of his four-year, $31 million deal. Robertson can be a legit first-line forward for Detroit and would add some much-needed offense. He recorded 35 goals and 45 assists for 80 points in 82 games last season. Robertson would likely have to sign an extension with Detroit, but he can be a key part of Detroit’s turnaround.

The Red Wings would trade two first-round picks and two prospects. The top prospect would be Buium, who was selected in the second round of 2021. Buium played in the AHL last season, recording 2 goals and 23 assists for 25 points in 67 games.

Dallas would also acquire Plante, who was selected in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Plante is a 19-year-old centerman who’s playing at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He recorded 9 goals and 19 assists for 28 points in 23 games.

Red Wings GM Confident With Group He’s Building

Detroit hasn’t made the playoffs in nine years, but Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman believes they are building something special.

Detroit had a goal of making the playoffs last season, but it didn’t happen. Entering the offseason, Yzerman says he’s open to adding a star player, as he’s confident the Red Wings are closing in on a playoff spot.

“We’ve kind of felt that all along, we’re going to look at any good player — any player that can help us in any role — if there’s a player worthy of spending whatever amount on, that has an interest in playing in Detroit and fits a need for us, absolutely we would try to do that,” Yzerman said

“We’re building a nucleus of a good team with the idea that this team is going to win,” Yzerman added. “I don’t measure success by making the playoffs one year and bowing out the next year. I consider it being continued success. That you’re in and expected to be in the playoffs, you’re trying to win and aiming for Stanley Cups. That’s what we’re trying to do here.”

Detroit enters the offseason with just over $21.3 million in cap space.

Stars Open to Trading Robertson

After Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs, reports came out that the Stars were looking to shake up their roster.

NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period confirmed that Dallas is putting Robertson on the trade block.

“Robertson, 25, is entering the final year of a four-year, $31 million contract with Dallas and moving his $7.75 million cap hit would allow Nill to round out the rest of the roster,” Pagnotta wrote. “However, two sources close to the situation told TFP on Wednesday that there is an internal hesitancy to part with Robertson, who has put up back-to-back 80-point seasons after collecting 109 points in 2022-23.”

Robertson is a one-time NHL All-Star.
