Things are bad in Cincinnati after the city’s biggest star, Joe Burrow, went down with a significant injury. Things are worse in New York where a winless Giants team benched their starting quarterback, Russell Wilson, in search of their first victory.
These are the conditions that lead Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox to propose a potential union for the two unfortunate foes.
“With Jameis Winston in the fold as Dart’s backup/mentor, the Giants should immediately view Winston as expendable,” Knox writes on his NFL trade block big board. “While Wilson has only looked good in one of his three outings this season, he’s a very experienced starter who could potentially fill in for one of the myriad of injured quarterbacks for a game or two.”
As far as a “myriad of injured quarterbacks” is concerned, I’m not sure the NFL has that problem, yet. Burrow is the only starter set to miss an extended period of time. Brock Purdy returns this week, as could Justin Fields. Jayden Daniels will be back for Week 5 and JJ McCarthy has returned to practice as well.
This trims down the field, in my opinion. As far as quarterbacks go, Wilson is as cheap as you’re going to find.
Trey Hendrickson Labeled As Trade Block Candidate
Where Russell Wilson’s price is estimated at a single fifth round pick, teams would have to cough up a lot more to pry super star Trey Hendrickson away from Cincinnati.
Even then, the edge rusher is number six on Knox’s big board with an estimated trade price of at least a second round pick.
“Cincinnati Bengals pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson finally makes it onto our board—not because Cincinnati finally lost a game but because the market for pass-rushers just got hotter due to injuries,” Knox writes. “That desperation might finally allow the Bengals to get something close to their asking price for the reigning NFL sacks leader.”
As we all know, the offseason drama lead to only a one year deal being signed by Hendrickson. This makes him the perfect rental for a contender and a cheap acquisition for any team willing to pay him what he actually deserves.
Though Bengals fans do not want to see him go, team’s could be willing to mortgage a whole lot for the 30-year-old.
“The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported in August that the Bengals wanted a 2026 first-round pick and a young defensive player in return for Hendrickson,” Knox continues. “While they’re not going to drop their price to bargain levels just because Joe Burrow is out for the next three months, they could be more open to counteroffers.”
He names the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers as potential dance partners.
Should The Bengals Be Sellers
It’s easy to forget that last week’s blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings was just the first loss of the season for the Bengals. Still, it’s going to take an outstanding coaching effort to get this Jake Browning lead team to a position to compete when Joe Cool returns.
The schedule is also not doing the Cats any favors. I’m not ready to say the Bengals should punt the year, not even close actually, but should that decision be reached, bringing in an extra first round pick and getting $40 million off the books is a no brainer.
