The Kansas City Chiefs have long been connected to New York Jets running back Breece Hall as a potential answer to their backfield woes, and the speculation built to a fever pitch in the final hours of trade deadline day after the running back’s cryptic post.
The bottom-dwelling Jets moved into full sell-off mode before Tuesday’s trade deadline, shipping cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams in separate deals that gave them a total of three first-round draft picks.
Hall, who was seen as one of the most likely trade pieces for the Jets, took to social media to offer a cryptic reaction to Gardner’s trade — and in doing so sparked new speculation about the Chiefs.
Chiefs Urged to Check on Breece Hall
Though the Chiefs got their offense back on track after their 0-2 start, the team has still failed to find consistent production from running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt.
After the Jets dealt Gardner a few hours ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, some reporters speculated that the Chiefs might be able to make a run at Hall as well.
“If Sauce was on the table, then Breece should be too,” noted reporter Brett Kollman in a post on X. “Veach needs to get in on that.”
Hall also sparked speculation of a trade with a cryptic post that USA Today reporter Cory Woodroof interpreted as a desire to be traded as well.
“In a very telling post after the Gardner trade went through, Hall seemed to hint that he’s very jealous of his former teammate getting traded elsewhere,” Woodroof wrote. “We’re sure the [Quinnen] Williams trade amplified that feeling.”
Chiefs Seen as Top Fit for Breece Hall
The Chiefs have long been seen as a top fit for Hall. SI.comâs Fernando Alfaro-Donis warned last month that the team can’t keep relying on quarterback Patrick Mahomes to scramble for yards and will need a trusted option in the backfield.
âItâs clear that a backfield consisting of Hunt and Isiah Pacheco isnât cutting it in 2025 for the Chiefs,â Alfaro-Donis wrote. âHaving a player that threatens teams on the ground keeps their defenses honest, as well as expanding the pass game to make things easier for Mahomes and their offense.”
Hall could also be an asset to Mahomes in the passing game, the reporter added.
Hall is having a productive season, rushing for 581 yards and two touchdowns and adding 21 receptions for 178 yards despite an otherwise struggling Jets offense.
âTrading for Hall would not only give the Chiefs a boost in their rushing attack, but his upside as a receiving back means the field spreads out more for Mahomes and all of the other Chiefsâ pass catchers,” Alfaro-Donis added.
The Chiefs could have added urgency to their trade-deadline plans after losing to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday to fall to 5-4. The Chiefs are now two full games behind the Denver Broncos for the lead in the AFC West and fall to the No. 8 spot in the conference, outside the playoff picture.
