The Kansas City Chiefs put up a valiant fight against the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day in Week 17, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to prevent them from suffering a 20-13 loss when all was said and done. All throughout the game, folks were fixated on star Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, as retirement rumors continue to swirl around him as the end of the 2025 campaign draws near for Kansas City.
Kelce openly contemplated retiring from the NFL last offseason, but he opted to run it back for one more year in 2025. It’s safe to say things have not gone the Chiefs’ way this season, leaving fans to wonder whether or not Kelce would be open to playing one more season in an effort to go out on a high note. After losing to the Broncos, the future Hall of Famer provided a cryptic response when addressing his future.
Travis Kelce Shoots Down Retirement Question After Loss to Broncos
Over the past few seasons, Kelce’s production for the Chiefs has taken a notable step back, but it goes without saying that he has remained one of the most consistent tight ends in the league. That has continued again for Kelce this season, as he’s racked up 73 receptions for 839 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games, helping him earn his 11th-straight Pro Bowl selection.
At 36 years old, Kelce is closer to the end of his playing career than the beginning. At this stage of the game, he doesn’t have much left to accomplish, as he’s earned four All-Pro First Team selections and three Super Bowl championships throughout the course of his career. But with the Chiefs missing the playoffs entirely this year, it’s clear this is not how Kelce intended for his final NFL season to play out.
Whether or not that matters to him, though, remains to be seen. Kelce has proven he can still play at a high level for Kansas City, and his rapport with Patrick Mahomes in the passing game is unparalleled. When asked about his retirement plans after the team’s loss to the Broncos, Kelce kept his cards close to his chest, providing a murky answer to the question.
“I’ll let that be a decision I’ll make with my family, friends, the Chiefs organization when the time comes,” Kelce said when addressing his impending retirement decision.

It’s fair to say that the only reason Kelce’s retirement appears to be up in the air is because of how Kansas City’s season has unfolded. Missing the playoffs entirely is unheard of during the Mahomes era, and it’s obviously something that isn’t sitting well with the team. The question that everyone is asking is the same: Is this really how Kelce wants to leave the NFL?
Kelce can do pretty much whatever he wants at this point. Again, he’s remained incredibly productive on the field, but he’s also set to marry his fiancée, superstar musician Taylor Swift, over the offseason, and he’s also begun establishing himself as an actor in various television shows and movies. Kelce has a big decision to make, and it doesn’t seem like he’s in a rush to let the world know what his plan is.
