Turkey vs Portugal preview
To the victor belong the spoils.
Both winners of their opening Euro 2024 contests – just – Turkey and Portugal clash for top position in Group F and guaranteed progression to the knockout stages on Saturday.
Turkey edged out Georgia 3-1 earlier this week in a clash that many believe deserves its own Wikipedia page.
It was an instant classic in a piping hot atmosphere with both sides giving absolutely everything before teenager Arda Guler eventually grabbed the crucial winner.

Things were a little less exhilarating for Roberto Martinez’s Portugal, who required an injury-time winner from Francisco Conceicao to clinch three points.
It was still entertaining but they struggled to break down a stubborn Czech Republic, who opted for perhaps the most defensive set-up of any side at this year’s Euros.
Martinez and his new Golden Generation are one of the tournament favourites having won every game during qualifying, but there it looks clear that he still doesn’t know his best starting XI.
It’s not a match that’s been particularly kind to Turkey over the years. They’ve met each other seven times with Portugal winning six of those with Turkey’s only win coming in a friendly.

Goals
Yes, Portugal required a rather large slice of luck to beat their opponents, who are ranked behind Qatar in FIFA’s world rankings (36th).
But it was still a reasonable enough display given the Czech Republic’s conservative 5-3-2 formation. It was actually more like a back six with a defensive diamond in front.
Nevertheless, Roberto Martinez’s side still boasted 69% possession, 19 efforts at goal, eight on target and an xG of 1.82.
Turkey certainly won’t show the same rearguard action as the Czechs, and that will help this fluid Portugal side who scored more goals (36) than any other team in qualifying.

Brace yourselves
If Portugal are expected to score a few against Turkey, who shipped a bumper 15 efforts to minnows Georgia, then Cristiano Ronaldo should be the main beneficiary.
The 39-year-old scored 44 goals in 45 games for Al-Nassr last season, and enters Euro 2024 having netted 12 goals in his last 12 starts for Portugal – including five braces.
He still spearheads the attack, he still takes the penalties and he still managed to fire off five efforts at goal against the Czechs with the highest xG of any player on the pitch.

Portugal’s Nuno Mendes was a touch fortunate to avoid a booking against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
The Paris Saint-Germain left-back competed in 19 duels and committed two fouls during his 90-minute display.
He also lost possession 21 times and that could be telling against Turkey’s wonderkid Arda Guler, who was a menace down the right channel against Georgia.
Mendes has been booked three times in 24 appearances for Portugal, while he picked up four in 14 for PSG last season. He could have a more difficult assignment if Roberto Martinez reverts to a back four this weekend.
