Two Dolphins Players Face NFL Punishment for Actions in Bills Game

The NFL is handing down punishment to two Miami Dolphins players for actions in their game last week against the Buffalo Bills.

The league announced fines for Week 3 on Saturday, listing two Dolphins players for illegal hits. The Bills won the game and have seized an early lead in the AFC East, with a chance to make a move for the No. 1 overall seed in the conference.

Dolphins Face Two Fines for Bills Game

The league announced that Dolphins guard Aaron Brewer was fined $17,389 for an illegal blindside block in the first quarter of last Thursday’s game. Running back Ollie Gordon was also fined $5,045 for unnecessary roughness for an illegal use of the helmet.

The league has been cracking down on helmet-to-helmet hits in recent years, often fining players for plays that do not draw a flag.

No Fines for Another Controversial Play

While Brewer and Gordon both faced punishment for their hits in last week’s game, there were no players fined for another controversial play. As the Bills were driving in the red zone in the third quarter, Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks stopped Allen behind the line of scrimmage on a scramble up the middle. Brooks continued pushing Allen after the whistle and drew a penalty for a late hit.

After the play, Allen stood over Brooks and appeared to make a gun motion toward the Dolphins linebacker. The NFL has banned violent celebrations and fined other players for making gun motions, but Allen was not fined for his celebration.

Brooks was also not fined for his late hit, though his penalty gave the Bills a new set of downs. They went on to score a touchdown, leading to a 31-21 win.

The Dolphins raised concerns about a Bills play just before halftime. Quarterback Josh Allen fumbled a snap as he went to take a knee, tossing the ball quickly to the official as the whistle blew. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said after the game that he planned to ask the league why it was not ruled a fumble.

McDaniel said it was not worth raising the point to officials at the time, but wanted a full explanation from the league.

“It was a great exercise in my mental discipline. I saw it. I knew what happened, and I also saw the whistle blow, and then I saw them run it in,” McDaniel told reporters on Friday. “So I ran in to prepare for the second half, knowing that he’d just fumbled, or I thought they did, at least.”

McDaniel added that it was not worth getting upset about during the game, saying he needed to stay focused on such a tight contest against a divisional foe.

“I’ll get mad on game day if I think whatever I’m getting mad at will have an effect on stuff moving forward,” he said. “Otherwise, I don’t think it’s appropriate for everyone to wait around while I have an adult temper tantrum. I ran inside and worked on the plays coming out of the half.”
