On November 2nd, the San Antonio Spurs snapped their five-game winning streak, falling to the Phoenix Suns. In the 130-118 loss, Victor Wembanyama dropped his first stinker of the season, offering only nine points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
Still, he is second in the MVP race behind only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Spurs weren’t going to go 82-0, so one bad loss is no reason to panic. For now, the Spurs are very much still contenders.
Despite Wembanyama’s poor game, he is still averaging 26.7 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 4.7 blocks. He is attacking the basket more and settling for 3-pointers less, and seems to have a chokehold on all 29 other teams and their planning for the future.

Victor Wembanyama’s Impact Summed Up in Two Words
Fans and the media have been using all sorts of nouns and adjectives to describe Wembanyama ever since he entered the league. “Generational.” “Alien.” “Cheatcode.”
As teams plan for their futures and try to build contenders, Wembanyama is offering two feelings: fear and dread.
“What other teams are saying, it’s fear,” said insider Marc Stein on the All NBA Podcast. “He’s made such a leap that, is this his level now?”
Of course, the Spurs only have six games under their belt. None of the teams they’ve played has a winning record. In fact, the Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans are still searching for their first wins. Aside from facing off against Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo, Wembanyama hasn’t really been challenged yet.
“It’s been a favorable schedule, but it’s dread in 29 other front offices,” Stein added. “It’s dread that he’s now really figuring it out.”
Wembanyama Has Chance to Make NBA History
Derrick Rose is the youngest MVP in league history, winning it in 2011 at 22 years old. By the end of this season, Wembanyama will be three months younger than Rose was.
In 2011, Rose averaged 25 points and 7.7 assists. Like Wembanyama, he was the most exciting player in the NBA that season. The Chicago Bulls won 62 games that season, the most in the league, before losing to the Miami Heat in the Conference Finals.
Rose was also in his third year that season and made his first All-Star appearance the season prior.
“Halloween is a touch too early, even in the NBA, to start talking about MVP candidates,” Stein said. “But it looks like he’s going to be part of the MVP discussion. And this is probably the last year that it’s going to be an ‘if,’ he’s clearly gone to such a level now, playing with this absolute aggression, attacking the basket, shooting far fewer 3s, and really being attack-minded.”
Wembanyama is clearly on the rise, even after a poor outing. The NBA is grappling with the fact that he’s a top player on both ends of the floor. Even more terrifying is the fact that he will only get better in the coming seasons.
