Veteran Bills WR Lands With AFC Contender Days After Surprise Release

After losing his place with the Buffalo Bills, veteran wide receiver Elijah Moore gets a fresh start with another AFC contender.

The Bills parted ways with Moore last week to make way for the addition of fellow receiver Brandin Cooks, who had been granted a release from the New Orleans Saints. Moore struggled to find a place in Buffalo’s offense since joining as a free agent in the summer, ultimately losing his roster spot.

Moore has already signed with a new team, one that could end up facing the Bills in the playoffs.

Elijah Moore Heads West

The Denver Broncos announced on Tuesday that they signed Moore to their practice squad. The AFC West leaders could use Moore to boost their wide receiving corps, ESPN noted.

“Moore gives the Broncos another potential experienced option in a stretch run, especially as a slot receiver, when they are trying to keep themselves in the race for the AFC’s No. 1 seed in the postseason,” the report noted. “Moore would have some game-day elevations available over the final five games of the regular season as well.”

Moore came to the Bills with high hopes after performing well with lesser quarterbacks on the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, but struggled to click with Josh Allen and made only nine receptions for 112 yards in nine games with the Bills.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported just after Moore’s release that he was hoping to get a bigger role in the offense, leading to some tensions with the team.

“The #Bills and veteran WR Elijah Moore agreed over the past 24 hours on a mutual parting, source says, with Moore wanting more offensive reps. Brandin Cooks’ signing helped pave the way for Moore to be waived,” Rapoport reported in a post on X.

The Bills have been burned in the past by swapping veteran wide receivers midseason. They parted ways with Marquez Valdes-Scantling in October 2024 after landing veteran Amari Cooper in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Cooper went on to make 20 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns with the Bills while Valdes-Scantling signed with the New Orleans Saints and made 17 receptions for 385 yards and four touchdowns.

Brandin Cooks Looking to Make an Impact

Cooks said last week that he’s excited to join the Bills and team up with the reigning MVP.

“I mean, I just gotta be honest, the opportunity to be able to play with Josh is — I mean, you can’t pass up the opportunity,” Cooks said. “He’s a special player. All you do is hear about this organization from afar, how it’s a special place, how they treat players, and it’s all about ball. So I’m thankful to be here for sure.”

The veteran receiver went on to say that he thinks he will mesh well with Allen.

“I mean, there’s not a throw he can’t make,” Cooks added. “And you can tell he goes out there and there is not anything that he cannot do. From a competitor’s spirit, you want that. I’m thankful to be a part of that. The guy’s huge, he can run, he can throw. He can do it all. But his energy and his leadership skills jumps off the screen, and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”
