Veteran Playmaker Facing Discipline After Broncos’ Win Over Raiders

The Denver Broncos defeated the Las Vegas Raiders in a game that featured some betting controversy, but could also cost veteran linebacker Jamal Adams something extra in the coming week.

Adams made a play on Broncos running back RJ Harvey, who drew strong praise from Broncos head coach Sean Payton postgame.

He also committed an infraction that figures to draw attention from the league.

During the third quarter of the contest, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix found Harvey on a short pass that gained 4 yards before Adams brought the rookie second-round draft pick down.

Officials drew a flag on the play because Adams grabbed Harvey’s facemask. It gave the Broncos a free 15 yards on a drive that Harvey ultimately capped with a touchdown eight plays later.

There is no question about the face mask, especially since it was called on the field.

According to Section 2 (Personal Fouls), Article 15 (TWISTING, PULLING, OR TURNING THE FACEMASK OR HELMET OPENING) of the NFL rulebook, “If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask or helmet opening, he must immediately release it. He shall not grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask or helmet opening of an opponent in any direction.

“Penalty: For twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, or controlling the mask or helmet opening: Loss of 15 yards. The player may be disqualified if the action is flagrant. If the foul is by the defense, it is also an automatic first down.”

Per the NFL Football Operations portal, face mask penalties can incur fines of $11,593 on first offenses to $17,389 on repeat infractions.

The Broncos escaped their win over the Raiders without any fine-worthy penalties against them.

Harvey was no worse for wear after the hit from Adams. He finished the win with 75 yards and 1 TD on 17 rushing attempts, adding another 25 yards on six receptions against the Raiders. Adams tallied one total stop.

The Broncos came away with their 10th straight victory and are 11-2.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are now 2-11 on the season. They have lost seven straight outings, with their last victory coming back in October in Week 6.

Denver swept Las Vegas in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2014. The Raiders had swept the Broncos four times during their annual series from 2020 through the 2023 season. The Broncos have reclaimed the top spot in the AFC, and they own the best record in the NFL.

Up next, the Broncos take on the NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay is coming off a big win over the Chicago Bears in Week 14. The Broncos have gone 4-0 against the NFC so far. All of their wins are against the NFC East, though.

The Packers boast a top-10 defense and offense, so they will present a challenge for the Broncos on both sides of the ball. However, the Broncos are playing as complete a game as a team as anyone and host the Packers, where they are undefeated on the season so far.
