Veteran WR Stays in GB as Packers 53-Man Prediction Sees Crucial QB + RB Cuts

The National Football League is approaching the 48-hour mark to cut day. It’s a dreaded day for many NFL players who will be informed that they are not making a team’s 53-man roster.

In this case, some unique offensive decisions were made for the Green Bay Packers. Only a pair of QB’s made the cut. Shockingly, one veteran receiver remained on the team despite a rather poor preseason performance. Elsewhere, the rest was pretty standard.

24/7 Sports’ Zachary Jacobson Predicts Packers Cut 2 QB’s + Key RB

Jacobson has been covering the Packers for a decade. He is a former Packers reporter for Heavy as his recent post saw key predictions made for the Packers 53-man roster. While the Packers were able to give the fans of Lambeau Field a 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks, plenty of players left a lot to be desired.

Malik Willis threw an interception that should’ve never counted. With the ball clearly touching the ground, review indicated that it was somehow a catch. Regardless, he led a fantastic drive featuring a highlight reel catch from Matthew Golden. Not only that, but Romeo Doubs secured the touchdown.

From there, QB play was far from ideal. Taylor Elgersma has continued to try and prove himself, going 6/8 for 33 yards and a touchdown. Longtime backup Sean Clifford went just 6/19 with 19 yards. Simply put, averaging 3.16 yards per throw isn’t going to cut it.

Both Elgersma and Clifford were cut in Jacobson’s post, “While Canadian arm Taylor Elgersma outperformed Sean Clifford this preseason, there was no real victor in the Packers’ No. 3 quarterback battle. If anything, we’re all the losers for being subjected to it.”

Looking at the running backs, Jacobson puts Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson ahead of MarShawn Lloyd, “His most recent hamstring injury is what saves Emanuel Wilson’s roster spot.”

“It’s a shame that MarShawn Lloyd can’t stay upright because he showcased some incredible burst in his lone appearance this summer against the Indianapolis Colts. He can be a legitimate weapon, but unfortunately, the best ability anyone can have is availability,” he added.

Mecole Hardman’s Job is Safe – For Now

Mecole Hardman may hold the most undecided fate of them all. Plenty of Packers fans have their opinion on the veteran receiver, but Jacobson sees value in keeping him around for the short term.

“The only real question is whether or not the Packers would hang onto both Malik Heath and Mecole Hardman,” Jacobson said. “In this case, both have made their case on special teams… Hardman projects to be their primary return man.”

After all, the title of his post did indicate special teams were a priority. It’s a position the Packers have struggled with in previous years, so keeping Hardman around as a return man isn’t the worst of ideas.

Jacobson did note, “Once Watson is eligible to be activated to the 53-man roster, then this can be revisited.” Either way, Hardman and Malik Heath will have a few weeks to prove themselves before Christian Watson returns to the fold.
