Victor Wembanyama Describes ‘Evolving’ Game and His New Focus

Victor Wembanyama is one of the most transcendent basketball players to ever exist. His versatile skillset on both ends of the floor is the envy of the NBA, and the San Antonio Spurs are primed to dominate the league for the next several years as a result.

Wembanyama entered the league as a skinny teenager oozing with talent, although he appeared to be a bit overwhelmed, at least physically, by some of his opponents. If the way he started his third season is any indication, it’s safe to say that those concerns have been quelled.

Despite being an MVP candidate and emerging as one of the most dominant players the NBA has ever seen, Wembanyama is only 21 years old. He should get a lot better, and he recently revealed some areas of focus for him to stress.

Victor Wembanyama Is Not Eager to Label His Game

When he first entered the league, Wembanyama refused to name his position. Initially listed as a forward next to Zach Collins, Wembanyama quickly became the sole big man in the starting lineup.

Of course, he blossomed, although he is still listed as a “forward” when the Spurs introduce their lineups. At the end of the day, he couldn’t care less about position labels.

His game continues to grow and baffle fans. Even he can’t quite explain his playstyle.

My game is evolving so much and I’m realizing so many things, especially lately, that I can define it, but it would be defining the past, even if it was only a few months ago,” Wembanyama said on an appearance with Louis Vuitton’s podcast.

Wembanyama has worked out with Kevin Garnett, Jamal Crawford, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Chinese monks. With each training session, he not only refines his game but also adds to it.

On the court, the influences are apparent, and as he continues to train, his game will change. Defining it now will quickly become outdated.

Victor Wembanyama Outlines New Focus

Wembanyama can handle the ball, shoot from deep, and churn out highlight after highlight.

However, he has yet to enjoy a winning season in the NBA. This year, he aims to change that. Through four games, he is rebounding at a higher level and getting closer to the basket to take high-percentage shots. In short, he is getting back to basics.

I would say that it was varied, but maybe too varied,” he admitted. “I am focusing more on simple things. I’ve varied my game enormously over my life, which has enabled me to develop a lot of things. But now is not the time to develop, it’s time to win.”

While the eye-popping skills make for great entertainment and give him weapons to rely on, the Spurs have to play 48 minutes of winning basketball every night. Playing a simple game, which is new to him, has so far resulted in his most NBA success.
