For the first time in franchise history, the San Antonio Spurs are 5-0 to start the season. Victor Wembanyama has been stellar, playing at an MVP level to kick off the year.
On October 30th, the Spurs beat the Miami Heat 107-101. Wembanyama recorded 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks. Bam Adebayo looked like the best player on the court, recording a 31-point double-double.
For most of the game, the Heat looked scared to take the ball anywhere near the basket, and for good reason. Wembanyama’s defense has been on a new level this season, and he can swat away even the easiest layups.
However, to close out the first half, Adebayo unleashed a thunderous dunk on Wembanyama, sending social media into a frenzy.

Victor Wembanyama Reacts to Getting Dunked On
If you’re going to make a living in the paint, you’re going to get dunked on. It’s a fact of life. Wembanyama is the best shot-blocker in the league, but sometimes opponents still get their licks in.
He seemed totally unfazed after the game.
“Getting dunked on is part of the game,” Wembanyama said after the Spurs’ victory. “Until I’m getting dunked on more than at block shots, I’m going to keep going. But none of us are going to live to see this day.”
In the past, players have dunked with Wembanyama in the general vicinity, and aggregate accounts have been quick to declare it a “poster,” even though there was no effort to stop the shot.
Adebayo, however, dunked on Wemby emphatically. It was a legitimate highlight. Had the Spurs not gotten the win, maybe Wembanyama would have responded differently. Wemby ended the game by hyping up the crowd and yelling into the stands, so clearly he wasn’t thinking about just one play.
San Antonio Spurs Are Title Contenders
Is it too early to make that claim? The Spurs are 5-0, settling three of those games by ten points or more.
Wembanyama has been elite, arguably the best player in the world, and is doing all that without Luke Kornet or Kelly Olynyk backing him up. Add in De’Aaron Fox’s injury, and the Spurs’ second-best player is yet to take the floor this season.
Instead, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, and even Keldon Johnson are slotting into their roles perfectly. There is no “ego,” only team success. This year’s Spurs look like the Spurs of the past.
Until the Spurs hit a skid, I’m comfortable declaring them contenders. They’ve played like it all season (so far) and boast the best defender in the world. Initially starting the season with playoff hopes, the Spurs seem to have arrived earlier than expected.
