Victor Wembanyama Offers Blunt Goal for San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are expected to be, at least, one of the most interesting teams in the NBA. Between second overall pick Dylan Harper and reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, the Spurs have one of the more intriguing young cores in the league.

That’s not even mentioning Victor Wembanyama. The Alien. The Extraterrestrial.

Wembanyama is expected to cement himself as a top-five player this season, if he hasn’t already. He dominates on the defensive end and dazzles with an array of offensive moves. Around him, the Spurs are expected to take a massive leap, although the team has had trouble defining what their goals will be.

San Antonio Spurs Outline Preseason Goals

Normally, when a player or coach is asked point-blank what the goals are for the season, reporters get vague answers. “Win.” “Stay healthy.” “Compete.” “Grow.”

Most of the Spurs offered similar responses.

“Every time you match up or every time you step on the floor, you want to get better and better,” outlined rookie Carter Bryant.

Of course, Bryant is not expected to have a massive role this season, so wins and losses won’t sit on his shoulders.

We expect continuing to take steps in the right direction,” said head coach Mitch Johnson. “We want to continue to improve and get better and feel good about that as we continue to grow throughout the season.”

Johnson is starting his first full season as head coach, dropping the “interim” tag from last season. Under him, the Spurs went 32-45. Had Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox not had their seasons ended earlier, his record could be more impressive.

Wembanyama, meanwhile, was perfectly clear about where he wants to be: the playoffs.

Success would be getting to the playoffs and not the play-in,” said Wembanyama on October 20. “So I guess that means the sixth seed.”

The Spurs have not made the postseason since 2019, and Wembanyama is yet to play meaningful NBA basketball. Since drafting him, the Spurs have focused on development and talent acquisition. No more, says Wemby!

San Antonio Spurs to Have Trouble Making Playoffs

The Western Conference is stacked. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets are title-or-bust teams. The Houston Rockets and LA Clippers are expected to be very good.

On top of that, the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves are right up there with the Spurs. That’s eight teams looking to go on a deep run. The Spurs will have to beat out at least two of them.

Perhaps Julian Champagnie’s approach is a bit more realistic.

I don’t really want to put a point on what’s successful and what’s not,” argued Champagnie, taking a more mainstream stance. “We want to win them. We don’t know what that looks like right now, but we want to go as far as we can and be competitive in this league. So, you know, obviously our goal is to win as much as we possibly can.”

Wembanyama is one of the most competitive players in the NBA. Of course he would set the bar high. It’s up to his teammates to elevate the Spurs and get where Wemby wants to go.
