The future is now for the San Antonio Spurs. Victor Wembanyama is healthy and is dominating the preseason in new ways, and rookie Dylan Harper looks ready to usurp De’Aaron Fox as the starting point guard after just one game.
In his preseason debut, Harper offered nine points and three assists, quickly finding his footing in an overtime win over the Utah Jazz. Wembanyama added 22 points and seven rebounds.
The pair connected for a highlight-worthy dunk over Kevin Love, the first of many lobs Harper will throw Wembanyama’s way, although the superstar wasn’t sure it was the smartest play to run.

Harper Put Wembanyama in ‘Dangerous’ Situation
After missing the final 29 games of the regular season with blood clots, Wembanyama has become rather cautious. As of now, he is fully healthy and looks poised to dominate, but he knows better than anyone that it can all be taken away.
When Love got beneath Wembanyama, the French center had his legs taken out from under him and landed awkwardly, catching himself on the hoop’s stand. He sat there for a moment, collecting himself before hustling back to play defense.
He knows it could have gone a lot worse.
“I just thought it was a dangerous play,” he said after the game. “I mean, the foul was kind of dangerous.”
Love was called for a foul, and Wembanyama hit the free throw, putting the Spurs up by five, although it would take an overtime effort to dispatch the Jazz.
While the play rattled Wembanyama, he knows the on-court connection with Harper will only yield good things.
Victor Wembanyama Is Ready for the Season
The Spurs have spent the last three offseasons looking to add talent to build around Wembanyama. In the last year, they drafted both Harper and Stephon Castle and traded for Fox.
Clearly, having players who can get Wembanyama the ball is a priority.
Harper was drafted as a talented but fairly raw prospect, although he is quickly showing that he is ready for a sizeable NBA load. Wembanyama knows that the expectations are sky high, but it doesn’t seem to worry him.
“It’s good to be on the court with him,” he added. “You know, he looks ready, very comfortable, you know, already throwing these kinds of passes. So I’m very confident and I’m very happy to be able to spend some time on the court with him.”
Last season, Chris Paul assisted Wembanyama on 79 baskets. If Wemby can stay healthy, Fox, Castle, and Harper could all beat that number by the end of the season, establishing an excellent cast of running mates.
