Vikings 3rd-Rounder Lands New Team After Being Cut for Fighting

The Minnesota Vikings might have been done with former linebacker Brian Asamoah II, but it only took him a day to find his next NFL opportunity.

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Tennessee Titans are planning to claim Asamoah — a 2022 third-round pick — off waivers from Minnesota after the Vikings abruptly waived him from their 90-man offseason roster on Tuesday afternoon.

Asamoah lost his roster spot with the Vikings following a skirmish in practice last week. He had delivered a big hit to running back Aaron Jones in August 2’s practice, which prompted veteran offensive guard Will Fries and others to confront him. As a scuffle broke out, Asamoah threw a punch at Fries, leading to teammates separating them.

While the Vikings kept him around for their first preseason game against the Houston Texans and played him on 30 total snaps, they cut him loose shortly into the next week.

Asamoah, who played in 46 games for the Vikings in three seasons, will now have a new opportunity to earn a roster spot with the Titans in the final two weeks of 2025’s camp.

Brian Asamoah Sat on Roster Bubble With Vikings

Even before his punch-throwing antics, Asamoah was on thin ice with the Vikings.

The Vikings selected Asamoah with the No. 66 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft with expectations that he would bolster their linebacker corps. But while Asamoah played in 46 games over his first three seasons with the team, he played far more on special teams (802 snaps) than defense (188), playing on a career-low 33 defensive snaps in 2024.

To make problems worse for Asamoah, he also entered 2025 training camp with tough competition to make the roster as an inside linebacker. The Vikings have two starters in Blake Cashman and Ivan Pace Jr. and two probable backups in veteran Eric Wilson and sixth-round rookie Kobe King. That left Asamoah in a position where he needed to win a roster spot on the virtue of his special-teams play — if the Vikings even rostered five.

In Tennessee, however, Asamoah should have an easier time trying to crack the lineup. The Titans have a serviceable veteran in Cody Barton and a pair of 2024 draft picks in James Williams Sr. and Cedric Gray, but the depth at the position is thin otherwise.

Could Another Vikings LB Surprise Before Cutdown?

The Vikings might not keep five linebackers on their initial 53-man roster. If there is a spot up for grabs, though, Asamoah’s departure helps the case for the younger options.

Two undrafted rookies, Austin Keys and Dorian Mausi, are in the hunt for roster spots, but both are facing uphill battles given the depth at the position. In the Vikings’ first preseason game, Mausi finished with more tackles (three) than Keys (two), but Keys made both of his tackles unassisted and registered a quarterback hit in the game.

The Vikings also re-signed second-year linebacker Max Tooley on Wednesday after the departure of Asamoah. Tooley spent the entire offseason program with the Vikings, but the team waived him from the roster early in training camp on July 30. Now, he will get another shot in the Vikings’ final two preseason games to make a lasting impression.

The Vikings must reduce their roster to the 53-man limit before the NFL’s cut deadline at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 26.
