Vikings Get Major Update on J.J. McCarthy Injury

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy was entered into concussion protocol on Monday. The young signal caller reported concussion-like symptoms to the team after thier Week 12 loss, per ESPN‘s Kevin Seifert.

Players are not likely to play the week after they are put into the protocol. The Vikings play the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday at Lumen Field, a reunion with their former QB Sam Darnold. This was going to be a spot where Vikings fans could potentially see their new guy take down the other guy that they let walk.

However, per a new report, it is in fact unlikely that Minnesota will field J.J. McCarthy on Sunday, instead rolling out Max Brosmer.

Dianna Russini Reports McCarthy Unlikely to Play Sunday for Vikings

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini had the report on J.J. McCarthy’s status for this Sunday against the Seahawks: “Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy, who entered concussion protocol earlier this week, is not expected to play Sunday against the Seahawks, I’m told.”

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as PurplePTSDs Janik Eckhardt mentioned that players freshly in the protocol usually don’t play the following game.

This injury comes at an especially bad time for J.J. McCarthy. The signal caller has struggled mightily through six games in his career, and it wouldn’t take much for Max Brosmer to steal his starting job. The bar for Vikings’ QB low is very low this year, so theoretically, Brosmer could steal the job with an average game of NFL QB play.

Kevin O’Connell Has Confidence in QB Max Brosmer

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke highly of QB Max Brosmer on Monday, per Kevin Seifert.

“I think we all have a lot of confidence in Max,” O’Connell said. “Ideally you’d love to have a bunch of runway for him to continue on his journey, but I know Max will prepare like crazy like he does every week. He’s been a snap away here since Carson went on IR, and I know he feels very much prepared if called upon and he’s going to go about the week as he’s been doing.”

Seifert went into more detail about the gravity of the situation:

“If Brosmer starts Sunday, he will be the seventh different quarterback to make a start for the Vikings since Kirk Cousins tore his right Achilles tendon midway through the 2023 season. The Vikings would presumably elevate veteran quarterback John Wolford from the practice squad to serve as Brosmer’s backup.”

Also per Seifert, Kevin O’Connell mentioned that Brosmer’s top attribute was “seeing things at a veteran-level type of eye progression.”

Max Brosmer should know the importance of the moment. Though it’s unlikely to say that he could be the long-term starter of the Vikings, it’s not far-fetched to say he could steal the short-term job. As mentioned, it wouldn’t take much for Brosmer to clear the bar of QB play that McCarthy has set.

Could Max Brosmer really do the thing and take McCarthy’s job?
