The Minnesota Vikings‘ losing streak extended to four games after falling 26-0 to the Seattle Seahawks on November 30 at Lumen Field. After J.J. McCarthy was unable to go due to a concussion, the Vikings went with Max Brosmer, and the offensive issues continued.
For the fifth time in six games, the Vikings failed to score more than 20 points, and it’s back-to-back games in which Minnesota didn’t even reach 10 points. Brosmer had a forgettable first NFL start as he went 19 of 30 on his pass attempts for 126 passing yards and four interceptions.
Moreover, the offensive line didn’t help him out as the Seahawks recorded four sacks. After the loss to Seattle, former Vikings cornerback Patrick Patterson, now an analyst on CBS Sports, shared his thoughts on what’s wrong with the Minnesota offense in recent weeks.
“I believe right now just watching this team is the connection with the quarterback and the receivers like it’s almost hard to watch J.J. McCarthy overthrow receivers, throwing the ball in the ground,” Peterson said on the November 30 edition of “CBS Sports HQ.” “That is how this offense is orchestrated by quarterback play and also the running game as well… This team’s success predicates off the quarterback, and the quarterback right now is not giving them anything.”
Vikings Were Embarrassed by Seahawks
CBS Sports NFL analyst Bryant McFadden also weighed in on the Vikings’ continued offensive struggles. McFadden noted that the first time in the Kevin O’Connell era, the Vikings have a liability at the most important position in football.
“When you look at what Kevin O’Connell has been able to do regardless of who’s been at the quarterback position, worst case scenario, we’ve seen serviceable play,” McFadden added. “With J.J. McCarthy, clearly the expectations were not there when he has been in the lineup. And now, when you talk about having Max Brosmer in this situation, a rookie free agent making his first start on the road in Seattle, against this defensive unit.
“We knew it was going to be ugly, but we didn’t think it would get this ugly. Sacked four times, four interceptions. They scored a defensive touchdown. I mean, this is who the Seattle Seahawks is if you don’t have your game right offensively. They can embarrass you. They’re the wrong bully to attack when you’re not a bully.”
Vikings Will Look to Snap Losing Streak in Week 14
The playoffs are an afterthought if they weren’t already, but now it’s all about ending the season on a positive note, which would be seeing if McCarthy can finish the campaign showing he can be QB1. However, there’s a debate about whether the Vikings should pursue another quarterback as insurance for next season.
It will be interesting to see if McCarthy clears protocol this upcoming week, as the Vikings will return home after two straight road games.
Minnesota will host the Washington Commanders, who are also having a disappointing season, so it’s an ideal opponent to try to snap this losing streak, which has been the main reason the Vikings have fallen out of playoff contention this season.
