Vikings Insider Gives Huge Free Agent Message for RB Position

The Minnesota Vikings have one game left on their 2025 NFL schedule, and then the offseason begins. Several aspects of this team need improvement, and one of them, outside of quarterback, is the running back position.

Minnesota won’t have a running back that rushes for over 1,000 yards as Jordan Mason leads the team in rushing yardage (664). Moreover, Aaron Jones Sr. is 31 and will need to be replaced soon.

As a result, The Athletic’s Alec Lewis floated multiple running backs that the Vikings could target in free agency on the December 30 edition of “The Alec Lewis Show.”

Lewis named Javonte Williams, Travis Etienne, Kenneth Gainwell, Emmanuel Wilson, and Brian Robinson Jr. as names Minnesota might have on its radar if the front office wants to go the free-agent route to address this weakness.

Furthermore, with so many names and profiles hitting the market in free agency, Lewis believes this approach might be sensible for the team.

“If you look at the free agent positions of this upcoming offseason, running back is one where there is a lot of depth and a lot of intriguing players there,” Lewis said. “So, if that’s where the Vikings wanted to save money and spend money, it would be a sensible spot.”

Brian Flores Speaks on Vikings Future

The running back position needs to be upgraded, but another aspect the Vikings must address is whether they can keep defensive coordinator Brian Flores. On December 30, Flores broke his silence regarding his future with Minnesota.

“Obviously, there’s been a lot of talk about my personal situation and next year,” Flores said (h/t Pro Football Talk). “Look, I’ve said this many times. I’ve loved my time here in Minnesota. My family loves it. The state of Minnesota’s been tremendous to me. [Coach Kevin O’Connell] mentioned there’s been great dialogue, and there has. And now we’ll just kind of let the club and my representation handle the rest.

“And so that’s kind of where I’m at on that. I don’t, as you guys know, don’t like talking about myself; I think our players are doing a lot of great things on the field, and I don’t want to take away from them in any way. I think if anything, they deserve all of the recognition, I certainly don’t play, as you guys know.”

Vikings Want to Keep Brian Flores as Defensive Coordinator

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Flores’ future in Minnesota, on December 28, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke with reporters and shared his thoughts on his defensive coordinator.

“We have [had contract extension talks]; it goes back a long way before those reports,” O’Connell told reporters. “We’ve had recent [and] very good dialogue. Flo knows I love him. He was the guy three years ago that I identified to bring in here, and the growth, and just our relationship, and what he’s meant to me personally is so massive.

“That’s not even taken into account what he’s been able to do defensively for our team and been such a huge part of helping us daily, minute to minute, weather the different storms we had to navigate this year. Things are in a really positive place right now. I absolutely want Brian Flores to be the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings as long as we can have him.”
