Amidst continuous talk about Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback, JJ McCarthy, ahead of his hopeful regular season debut next month, not all the chatter in and around the Vikings surrounds the former Michigan man.
One of the more intriguing stories in the room – certainly behind the ups and downs of MccCarthy – concerns undrafted rookie, Max Brosmer.
Brosmer has caught the eye in training camp, and produced an excellent 47 yard, 1 touchdown performance in preseason last weekend, going 5/8 for a 118.2 passer rating last Saturday against the Houston Texans.
As such, The Athletic’s Alec Lewis believes that as long as the Minnesota grad shows up in one of the final two weeks of the preseason, he should be able to “cement” his spot on the final roster.
“Undrafted rookie quarterback Max Brosmer built on his impressive preseason debut.” Lewis wrote on Thursdsay. “On Wednesday, facing a blitz-all defensive picture from the Patriots, he lobbed a deep ball down the left sideline to receiver Tim Jones.
Brosmer sounds like a longtime professional. He discussed Wednesday how much heâs learned from OâConnell, quarterbacks coach Josh McCown and the rest of the staff in a short stint. Replicate his production Saturday or even next week, and heâll further cement a job on the 53.”
Max Brosmer Given Strong Endorsement By Media And Coaches
Lewis also – unsurprisingly – had Brosmer in his most recent 53 man roster projection on Tuesday – a change from his prior one two weeks prior – citing his arm talent, vision and decision making as very much above the expected caliber of a rookie UDFA. So much so that Lewis notes that he has been turning heads both in public and private.
“Brosmer going undrafted is head-scratching, to put it nicely.” Lewis wrote earlier in the week, “By comparison, the Texansâ Graham Mertz, who threw three interceptions Saturday, was selected in the sixth round. Brosmer sees the field, processing the defensive picture in a way you cannot teach. Coaches have raved about his smarts behind the scenes, too. If the Vikings donât add him to the 53-man, theyâd risk losing a reliable player at the gameâs most critical position.”
How Likely Is Brosmer To Make The Final Roster?
If you take Lewis’ writing to heart, the answer would be fairly high. McCarthy is the starter, with Howell almost certainly locked in as the backup – given his strong first outing in preseason, in which he went 11/13 for 105 yards last weekend, and his experience as a starting QB in the league – having spent most of 2023 as the Washington Commanders‘ QB1.
Now that teams are allowed a third, emergency quarterback to suit up on game day, more and more franchises are keeping an extra signal caller on their roster. This could result in a direct head-to-head matchup between Brosmer and veteran, Brett Rypien.
Considering Brosmer’s superior performance last week, and Rypien’s age – he just turned 29 – one would imagine Minnesota would rather bet on the prowess of the young Georgia native if it comes down to a decision between the pair. But their respective showings over the next couple of weeks, both in camp and in friendly games, will ultimately determine both players’ fate.
