It wasn’t pretty, but the Minnesota Vikings grinded out a 20-10 win over the Detroit Lions on Christmas Day in Week 17. Undrafted rookie quarterback Max Brosmer drew the second start of his young career, and while he didn’t do much in this one (9/16, 51 YDS, 2 CAR, 16 YDS), it was enough to give the Vikings their fourth-straight win.
Considering how Brosmer threw four interceptions in his NFL debut against the Seattle Seahawks earlier this season, this was a much-improved performance from him. It’s been trial by fire for Brosmer during his first action filling in for the injured J.J. McCarthy, but it sounds like he’s taking it all in stride as the team turns its attention to Week 18.
Max Brosmer Dishes on First 2 Starts in NFL
It’s been a rough season for Minnesota on the offensive side of the ball. After watching Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones bolt in free agency and enjoy quite a bit of success with the Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts, respectively, the Vikings have largely struggled to get any sort of consistent production from the trio of McCarthy, Brosmer, and Carson Wentz.
In Brosmer’s first start against Seattle, he struggled mightily against a top-notch defense, as he threw for just 126 yards and the aforementioned four interceptions. Against Detroit, head coach Kevin O’Connell scaled back the game plan to take much of the pressure off of Brosmer’s shoulders. Again, he didn’t do much, but a win is a win.
Brosmer likely didn’t anticipate himself being in this sort of situation as a rookie, but he’s done his best to learn on the fly and work on finding ways to help his team win. On the surface, Brosmer knows his numbers are ugly, but he’s made it clear he’s learned quite a bit during his time on the field, and he appreciates his team and his teammates for helping him out along the way.
“Lots of learning,” Brosmer said when asked about the first two starts of his career. “NFL football is hard; people say it a lot. NFL football is fun, too … My favorite part is the process. The people around the team and around the facility, that’s what makes playing for the Vikings fun. To have earned those opportunities and have the guys in the huddle in full support throughout the ups and the downs of our team’s success … it’s a blessing, and I’m grateful for it.”
Max Brosmer Could Start Vikings’ Regular-Season Finale

It was always going to be tough for Brosmer to succeed right out of the gate for the Vikings, even though their offense is loaded with weapons. And while he still has a long way to come as a passer, Brosmer has proven that he can enter games and go out and get the job done, even if it isn’t necessarily flashy.
With McCarthy battling a hand injury, and Minnesota having nothing left to play for in Week 18, it would make quite a bit of sense for Brosmer to start again in the team’s regular-season finale. Should he draw the start, he’d find himself going up against a tough Green Bay Packers defense, which could present some challenges. As a result, Brosmer’s status will be worth keeping tabs on ahead of the team’s final game of the season.
