Vikings Reveal Hopeful News on J.J. McCarthy, Christian Darrisaw

The Minnesota Vikings dropped their fourth straight game with a 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on November 30 at Lumen Field. With J.J. McCarthy sidelined by a concussion, Minnesota turned to Max Brosmer, but the offense continued to struggle.

It marked the fifth time in the last six outings that the team failed to reach 20 points, and the second game in a row without getting to 10. Brosmer’s first NFL start was rough. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 126 yards and threw four interceptions.

The blocking in front of him offered little relief, as Seattle’s defense brought him down for four sacks. For this game, the Vikings were missing two key players: Offensive lineman Christian Darrisaw and McCarthy.

After the contest, head coach Kevin O’Connell shared the latest on both players. Here’s what he said about McCarthy:

“He is, as of right now [McCarthy is in concussion protocol], but we’ll see how he does [on December 1],” O’Connell said postgame after the loss to the Seahawks. “Our goal is [that] he clears and he can have a good week of practice and have an opportunity to play next week.”

Christian Darrisaw Nearly Played for the Vikings

While there was no doubt that McCarthy wouldn’t be suiting up for the Vikings in this game against the Seahawks, Darrisaw was another situation. The offensive lineman’s status for the contest was announced on gameday, and Minnesota listed him as inactive.

O’Connell spoke about what led to their decision on Darrisaw for gameday.

“I think it was close. It was just a combination of the ankle — some discomfort there — and then just we’re still in a world where his knee is something that he’s working through every week,” O’Connell added. “I think he’s obviously such an important, impactful player to our offense that we’re always going to try to get him out there. And CD wants to be out there. He just couldn’t quite get there to play today.”

Vikings Get Honest Message Over Offensive Issues

Following Minnesota’s defeat against Seattle, CBS Sports NFL analyst Bryant McFadden also weighed in on the Vikings’ continued offensive struggles in the last few weeks. McFadden also noted that the first time in the Kevin O’Connell era, the Vikings have a liability at the most important position in football.

“When you look at what Kevin O’Connell has been able to do regardless of who’s been at the quarterback position, worst case scenario, we’ve seen serviceable play, McFadden said on the November 30 edition of “CBS Sports HQ.” “With J.J. McCarthy, clearly the expectations were not there when he has been in the lineup. And now, when you talk about having Max Brosmer in this situation, a rookie free agent making his first start on the road in Seattle, against this defensive unit.

“We knew it was going to be ugly, but we didn’t think it would get this ugly. Sacked four times, four interceptions. They scored a defensive touchdown. I mean, this is who the Seattle Seahawks is if you don’t have your game right offensively. They can embarrass you. They’re the wrong bully to attack when you’re not a bully.”
