Vinicius Junior has issued an apology over his outburst towards Xabi Alonso during Real Madrid’s 2-1 win against Barcelona on Sunday.

The Brazil international was furious with Xabi Alonso after he was substituted in the 72nd minute and headed straight down the tunnel at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Vinicius returned to the bench and was then at the centre of the bust-up between the two sets of players after the full-time whistle.

It is understood that the relationship between Alonso and Vinicius is strained following the incident but the winger has now said sorry for his reaction towards Madrid’s head coach during the game.

‘Today I want to apologise to all Madrid fans for my reaction to being substituted in El Clasico,’ Vinicius Jr said in a statement.

‘Just as I already apologised in person during training today, I also want to apologise again to my teammates, the club, and the president.

‘Sometimes my passion gets the better of me; I always want to win and help my team.

‘My competitive nature stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents. I promise to keep fighting every second for the good of Real Madrid, as I have done since day one.’

Madrid are now five points clear at the top of La Liga following Sunday’s win.
