The Golden State Warriors have been mostly quiet this offseason, but one name continues to swirl around the Bay: LeBron James.
While James remains under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for $52.6 million, rumors have resurfaced about a potential move away from L.A. as he nears the end of his career. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Warriors still have a degree of interest if James ever seeks a fresh setting for a farewell season.
“I believe that the Warriors, who have shown an interest in acquiring James dating to the February 2024 trade deadline some 18 months ago, will remain in the mix if James ever does reach the point that he’s looking for a last hurrah elsewhere,” Stein reported.
The report stops short of predicting any kind of deal. But with speculation growing around the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, and Warriors as possible destinations, the idea of James joining Stephen Curry is once again gaining traction.
Warriors Still Juggling Offseason Questions
Golden State still has major holes to fill. Kevon Looney signed with the New Orleans Pelicans, leaving a gap at center. They’ve been pursuing Al Horford as a veteran replacement, but no deal has materialized.
Meanwhile, restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga remains unsigned. Golden State is being deliberate with his future, weighing both trade interest and their own cap limitations.
A Long Shot Worth Watching

Stein notes that a buyout is highly unlikely this summer, and LeBron remains deeply rooted in Los Angeles off the court. He hasn’t given any clear indication that he’s looking to leave. But in the NBA, things shift quickly—and if they do, Golden State seems like a team ready to pick up the phone.
It’s unclear whether LeBron has had internal conversations about moving on from the Lakers, or whether this is just smoke. Still, the idea of him teaming up with Curry for one final run is the kind of possibility that sticks—especially with both stars nearing the twilight of their careers.
If he ever decides he wants a new challenge or a different stage for his farewell, the Warriors have the pedigree, flexibility, and interest to make it work. It may be a long shot, but it’s one worth keeping an eye on.
