Warriors Get Concerning Stephen Curry Injury Update

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, currently sidelined with a quad contusion, is expected to be re-evaluated on Thursday. However, there’s no definitive timeline for his return, as the four-time NBA champion hasn’t participated in any on-court basketball activities since his injury last Wednesday.

Andscape’s Marc J. Spears provided a rather grim update on Curry during Monday’s episode of “NBA Today” on ESPN.

“It’s not good,” Spears said of Curry’s physical condition.

“He’s going to get reevaluated on Thursday. He’s not doing any on-court work… just getting rehab. Definitely not good.”

Curry was previously expected to be sidelined for approximately one week after he injured his quad against the Houston Rockets last Wednesday. However, a lot will depend on his rehab and physical re-evaluation on Thursday.

Warriors Avoided Injury Scare

The concerning report notwithstanding, the Warriors survived a scare when an MRI last Thursday revealed Curry suffered a quad contusion and a muscle strain, not a tear. Subsequently, Kerr revealed he breathed a sigh of releif over the results of the MRI.

“It’s a big relief,” Kerr said on the Stephen Curry injury, via The Athletic’s Nick Friedell.

“You always worry when Steph goes down that it’s something that’s going to keep him out for a while. So, the fact that we’re taking it by the week and doesn’t appear to be anything too serious is a great sign. It gives us relief for sure.”

To Kerr’s point, Curry grimaced in pain on the floor before limping to the locker room in last Wednesday’s loss to the Rockets. He got hurt with 3:24 left when he tried to guard a charging Amen Thompson under the basket, which was initially deemed an offensive foul. However, the call was overturned into a blocking foul on Curry, who braved the injury and stayed on the court until the last 35.2 seconds.

Could Podz Step Up?

In Curry’s absence, Podziemski returned to Golden State’s starting unit in Saturday’s 104-96 win over the Pelicans, finishing with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds, and earning the praise of head coach Steve Kerr.

“All-around game from Brandin, and that’s the guy we know,” Kerr said, via Sam Gordon of San Francisco Chronicle.

“That’s the best version of him. Nights like tonight. Catch and shoot when he’s open. I love that he took nine threes. He’s been passing them up this year and pump-faking and driving into the paint. We want him to let it fly.”

Draymond Green was pleased with Podz’s aggressive intent in Curry’s absence.

“We always talk to him about just being aggressive,” Green said Podz. “It’s when you’re timid that you make the mistakes. He was extremely aggressive … and even when he wasn’t scoring, it created for other guys because of the aggressiveness he was playing with. So, he played a really good floor game for us.”

Podz is expected to remain the team’s starting point guard until Curry returns, even when De’Anthony Melton (knee) makes his season debut later this week. Meanwhile, Stephen Curry’s younger brother, Seth Curry, is expected to make his season debut against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.
