The Golden State Warriors will be without Moses Moody for the remainder of the preseason after the 23-year-old guard suffered a left calf issue in practice. Head coach Steve Kerr confirmed the injury, calling it precautionary and saying he’s “not too concerned” about the timeline for Moody’s return.
Kerr said the team hopes to have Moody available for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 22. The guard will be re-evaluated in about a week, with the team prioritizing a full recovery ahead of the new campaign.
Warriors Confident in Moody’s Recovery
Before the setback, Moody had impressed through two preseason games — scoring 19 points in a win over the Lakers and adding 10 in a victory against Portland. His improved shooting and activity on both ends had positioned him for a larger role in Kerr’s rotation this season.
The Warriors split their early preseason games with the Lakers, winning 111–103 at Chase Center before falling in Los Angeles. Stephen Curry sat the second matchup as a precaution, with Golden State focused on health and continuity rather than early results.
Kerr’s tone suggested optimism regarding Moody’s return. “Not too concerned” has been the consistent message, with the team viewing the injury as minor and mainly taking preventive measures given the soft-tissue nature of calf issues.
When Could Moody Return and Who Steps Up for the Warriors
Moody’s re-evaluation is expected in a little over a week. If progress continues, he could be cleared just before opening night. The Warriors are taking a careful approach, knowing that rushing a calf injury could lead to a setback. He’ll go through limited-contact drills first, followed by a gradual ramp-up to full speed.
In Moody’s absence, minutes on the wing will likely go to Brandin Podziemski and Buddy Hield. Each brings something different. Podziemski adds rebounding, pace, and secondary playmaking. Hield provides floor spacing and shooting gravity around Curry-led units.
Podziemski’s energy and defense can help stabilize the second unit. Hield’s quick-trigger shooting fits naturally alongside Curry and Jimmy Butler. Kerr is expected to mix both lineups through the final preseason games before settling his rotation for opening night.
The Bigger Picture for Golden State

Moody’s absence comes at an important time for Golden State. The team is working to integrate new pieces and reestablish chemistry heading into 2025–26. His development remains a key storyline. The Warriors view him as a bridge between their veteran core and the next generation.
If the recovery stays on track, Moody should be ready to go by opening night. For a Warriors team looking to balance health, youth, and urgency, that would be the best possible outcome.
