Warriors Linked to Anthony Davis Trade: ‘Anything is Possible’

With reports that the Dallas Mavericks could potentially blow up their roster, the Golden State Warriors could seize the opportunity to acquire Anthony Davis, the 10-time All-Star whom they have coveted for years.

According to The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami, the Warriors (7-6) will be very active ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline, exploring every last opportunity.

“The Warriors have daydreamed about Davis for years, so anything is possible, especially with Dallas possibly approaching selloff mode,” he wrote.

However, Kawakami threw cold water on a potential deal due to Davis’ injury history.

“But the AD/Warriors moment likely has passed,” he continued. “Davis is an old 32 — often hurt, currently hurt, and Dallas just fired the guy who made the worst trade in recent NBA history to acquire him last season. The Warriors don’t need to add anybody that expensive and that prone to miss a month at any time.

“Conclusion: AD wouldn’t be worth trading away [Jimmy] Butler plus other assets.”

Mavericks Shopping Roster?

According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, the Warriors have internally discussed blowing up the roster after they fired GM Nico Harrison amid a poor to the season.

“As for what’s next, I’m told that Mark Cuban, the Mavs’ minority owner who was exiled from basketball operations by Harrison, is back at the table, ” Mannix wrote.

“I’m also told that radical roster changes have already been discussed by Dallas’s new brain trust. Big changes could be coming to Big D.”

The Mavericks, despite starting the season 3-9, are loaded with talent, with a sea of wings, forwards and bigs coveted by the rest of the NBA. Among them are P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, Naji Marshall and even Golden State Warriors icon Klay Thompson, who is in the middle of a shooting slump.

Warriors Off to Mediocre Start

The Warriors began the season 4-1 but have since gone 3-5, partly due to injuries and also due to the regression of their prized youngsters, Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. At the start of the season, Kuminga and Podz were both in the starting unit, excelling in their respective roles next to Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler III. However, their performances have nosedived over the past few weeks, leading to head coach Steve Kerr relegating them to bench roles.

Kawakami’s report added that the Warriors are likely to shop both Kuminga and Podziemski ahead of the February 6 trade deadline.

“Kuminga isn’t the only Warrior who could get discussed this cycle,” he wrote.

“Brandin Podziemski has fans in the front office and around the NBA, but he was iffy last season and hasn’t been great this season. If the Warriors need to add value to a big trade, it could include Podziemski.

“Also, Hield is a team-worst -47 in the plus-minus this season. For context, Horford is second worst at -42, then Kuminga at -41. Podziemski is a +34 while Curry — whose minutes have largely been tied to Kuminga’s — is -2.”
