West Ham are looking to accelarate their summer recruitment drive and are eyeing a move for Arsenal outcast Fabio Vieira.

Much was expected for the Portugal Under-21 international when he joined the Gunners from Porto three years ago.

After showing only flashes of potential during two indifferent, injury interrupted seasons in north London, Vieira was loaned back to his boyhood club last term.

The 25-year-old regained some of the confidence that marked him out as such an exciting talent but securing a permanent return to the Portuguese club was beyond Porto’s financial means.

Vieira has been linked with a £20m move to Parma who are now managed by Mikel Arteta’s former assistant Carlos Cuesta.

Whether the Serie A club are able to meet Arsenal’s valuation remains to be seen, but the Hammers are now expressing an interest, as per Ben Jacobs.

No club-to-club talks have taken place yet, but the creative midfielder has been added to a list of potential targets in the knowledge he has been deemed surplus to requirements by Arteta.

With Martin Odegaard now back to full fitness and the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman emerging as credible first team options, Vieira wasn’t included in the squad that departed for its pre-season tour last week.

Dowman, in particular, has caught the eye in the friendly wins over AC Milan and Newcastle.

Indeed, the 15-year-old sensation played a key role against the Magpies, winning the late penalty that saw Odegaard secure a second successive victory from the spot.

‘Yeah, it is special,’ said Arteta on Sunday. ‘Obviously what he’s done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old.

‘We are extremely happy to have him. I think again the environment that he’s around in, his family, the people at the club and around the academy as well.

‘Super helpful because they put him into this position so early in his journey having a real chance and a real presence when he plays for the first team.’
