What Is the 2nd Tournament in the 2025 PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs?

Next on the schedule for the 2025 PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs is the penultimate BMW Championship. This tournament features the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings. With the near conclusion of the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday August 10th, players on the bubble are striving to make the cut and continue playing. The BMW Championship will kick off on August 14th, 2025 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.

With a $20,000,000 purse, players will compete for more than just money at the BMW Championship. Those near the top 30 in standings will push to advance in the FedExCup playoffs and make an appearance at the Tour Championship. The 2025 Tour Championship will take place at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia on August 20th through the 24th.

On the Bubble

Making it to the BMW Championship not only matters for the remainder of the 2025 season, but for the 2026 season as well. Those who make it to Caves Valley earn a guaranteed spot in the Players Championship and all eight signature events for the 2026 season. For many players, the weekend of the FedEx St. Jude Championship carries a lot of weight.

Notable names on the bubble like Jordan Spieth, Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark, and J.T. Poston are affected by every change in the leaderboard and need a solid performance to secure their spot. Other names such as Xander Schauffele, will likely make the cut as long as they don’t end up near the bottom of the leaderboard at TPC Southwind.

History of the BMW Championship

Previously known as the Western Open, the BMW Championship dates back to 1899. It is the oldest non-major tournament on the PGA TOUR schedule. Alongside it’s long history, the BMW Championship frequently receives recognition for its fan-forward experience and charitable contributions.

In 2024, the BMW Championship was named the PGA Tour ‘Tournament of the Year’ for the 2nd year in a row. 2024 marked the 6th year the event has received this accolade. Tyler Dennis, PGA TOUR chief competitions officer, gave appreciation in 2024 stating,

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, congratulations to the Western Golf Association and BMW on the BMW Championship being named 2024 PGA TOUR Tournament of the Year,” said Dennis. “The WGA and BMW have perfected the recipe for success, and partnering this year with Castle Pines Golf Club and an engaged Denver community took the event to new heights in delivering both a premium fan experience and record-setting charitable contributions for the Evans Scholars Foundation.”

The Western Golf Association serves as host to the BMW Championship. In 1930, the Western Golf Association and amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. founded the Evans Scholars Foundation. Since it’s 2007 designation as the penultimate event in the playoffs, the BMW Championship has contributed over $60 million dollars to the foundation.

In 2024 alone, the event contributed a record-breaking $10 million to the foundation. The Evans Scholars Foundation supports young caddies with limited financial means. Their scholarships offer full housing and tuition to successful students with financial need.

The Return to Caves Valley

The 2nd tournament of the FedExCup Playoffs makes a significant return to Caves Valley for the 2025 event. Back in 2021, a memorable six-hole playoff between Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay occurred. Eventually, Cantlay took home the win, but fans watched in anticipation as the golfers competed in the sudden death playoff.

Fans can watch the top 50 ranked players compete in the BMW Championship August 14th through the 17th. Following the BMW Championship, players will compete in the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.
