Why Tennessee CB Could Be Perfect Fit for Dolphins

The NFL Draft is always important for certain NFL franchises. For the Miami Dolphins however, it may not be top of mind.

Still, it’s never too early to start thinking about potential picks, especially since Miami will have a lot of fish to fry come the offseason. They still have to find a new GM as Chris Grier is out the door and they still must decide on the future of Mike Mcdaniel and Tua. However, whit the news that a game-changing player at a position of need has become available, Miami could begin to shift focus to the draft.

Evaluating McCoy’s Upside and Risk

Some Dolphins may not like the idea of drafting a player as injury prone as Mccoy has been. After all, he has not played a snap of football all season after a devasating ACL tear suffered in January. In his two years of college though, he’s done enough to potentially pique the interest of the organization and give them a head start on building for the future. He recorded 6 interceptions and 16 pss breakups in his collegiate career and has the length and ball skills to succeed at the next level.

Most importantly for the Dolphins, he seems like he can fit into any scheme with any coach, therefore giving them some options should they be looking for a new head coach this offseason. Mccoy is the kind of blue chip prospect that teams dream of landing on draft day.

However, the one true concern is that Mccoy could turn out to be a Grier era sot of player: someone who carries his injuries with him into the NFL and can’t stay on the field for an extended period of time.

Exploring Miami’s Draft Directions

Also, cornerback doesn’t seem to be a position of need entirely for the Dolphins. However, a lot of players are on one year deals such as Jack Jones, who has been outstanding all year long, and Kader Kohou, who has been injured frequently this season and could be moved on.

I’m not saying Mccoy could be the best option for the Fins, but he certainly could be worth a look. With all the distractions the team has faced over the past few weeks, it would be nice to go into the offseason and the draft wit a sense of closure and understanding. Mccoy may not be the perfect player now, but he could be in the long term.

There are several pundits who believe that Miami could go in several directions with the pick. Some say they could pick up a new edge rusher in someone like David Bailey out of Texas Tech. Even more are saying that they could use it on a developmental QB such as LaNorris Sellers out of South Carolina. Still, it seems as if Mccoy is one of the most popular picks no matter his injury status.

Ultimately, it is up to the Dolphins to decide what their future looks like. Do they want to continue to be risk takers? Or will they play it safe in an offseason of uncertainty?
