Wimbledon Day 1/2 WTA Recap & Highlights: Gauff, Pegula and Zheng Upset Early

Catch up on all of the latest action with Heavy’s Wimbledon Day 1/2 WTA recap.

We are now only two days into Wimbledon, and so far, the historic event has already seen several top-seeded players suffer early eliminations.

Day one saw several top-seeded players like World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini, and Australian Open winner Madison Keys all pick up big wins. On the flip side, however, Paula Badosa, who entered the tournament as the No. 9 seed, fell to Leicester’s own Katie Boulter, who boldly proclaimed herself a dark horse heading into this year’s tournament.

Day one also notably saw 2023 Wimbledon winner Markéta Vondroušová kick off what she hopes will be a deep run with a straight-set win over McCartney Kessler, who nearly pushed the former champ to a third set despite conceding the first set 6-1.

Additionally, former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who suffered a first-round elimination at the French Open back in May, was able to pick up a straight-set win over Aussie Talia Gibson to advance to the second round.

And last, but certainly not least, local fan-favorite Emma Raducanu picked up a dominant win over Mimi Xu, winning 78% of her service games to secure a spot in the second round.

WTA Wimbledon Day Two Recap

While day one of Wimbledon saw a number of top-seeded players advance, day two was filled with upsets.

World No. 2 Coco Gauff, who raised the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen just weeks prior at the French Open, suffered a stunning straight-set loss to Dayana Yastremska on Centre Court, while fellow American and No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula suffered a straight-set loss to World No. 122 Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Court 2.

The day also notably saw Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng come up short against Katerina Siniakova, while both Karolina Muchová and Marta Kostyuk suffered upsets of their own.

Despite that, former World No. 1 Iga Światek and budding young star Mirra Andreeva both picked up straight-set wins along with 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina.

Additionally, day two saw Maria Sakkari kick off her 2025 Wimbledon campaign with a straight-set win over Anna Blinkova, while Danielle Collins picked up a commanding win of her own over Camila Osorio.

WTA Wimbledon Day Three Preview

Following an action-packed first two days at SW19, second-round action will kick off on Wednesday.

Centre Court will play host to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who will collide with Marie Bouzkova. Additionally, Emma Raducanu and Markéta VondrouÅ¡ová will meet in a highly-anticipated showdown that will see Raducanu look to pick up her first head-to-head win since the pair’s 2021 meeting at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, Madison Keys will look to move one step closer toward winning her second Grand Slam of the year when she faces off with Olga Danilovic in the first match of the day on Court 2, with Naomi Osaka then set to face off with Kateřina Siniaková just hours later.

In addition, Court 1 will notably see Katie Boulter look to build on her first-round win over Paula Badosa when she collides with World No. 100 Solana Sierra, and Court 3 will see Jasmine Paolini look to move one step closer to another final when she collides with Kamilla Rakhimova.
