Would Boston Consider Another Bite at Rotten Trade Apple, Even For ‘Insane Haul’?

To some Boston Red Sox fans, even the mere suggestion would be like returning to the scene of the crime.

In a recent column for ClutchPoints, Bailey Bassett had what on the surface seemed like a pretty reasonable trade proposal for the Red Sox to consider. Some might even say that Bassett’s idea would result in an “insane haul” for Boston, one the team would be crazy not to accept.

But these days, there is likely a sizeable chunk of Red Sox fans who would prefer that their team never again do business with the San Francisco Giants.

MLB Analyst Proposes Trading Jarren Duran to San Francisco for Prospects

On June 15, Boston shocked the baseball world by trading Rafael Devers to the Giants for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III, and low-level minor leaguer Jose Bello. The immediate reaction from the Red Sox fan base was overwhelmingly negative, lamenting what was thought to be a weak return for their homegrown superstar.

So forgive New England natives who may be trying to figure out how to ensure that Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow will not be able to contact a member of the Giants front office anytime soon.

But what if those lines of communication resulted in the trade of a Boston outfielder, who many people already expect will be shipped out, for a trio of prospects, including two Triple-A pitchers, that could provide a big boost to the organization?

In his trade pitch, Bassett suggests that the Red Sox send Jarren Duran to the Giants for left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt (Giants No. 2 prospect), rookie league outfielder Rayner Arias (Giants No. 7) and right-hander Carson Ragsdale (Giants No. 21).

Jarren Duran Has Long Been Subject of MLB Trade Rumors

Duran has long been the subject of trade rumors. With a logjam in the outfield that kept Roman Anthony, MLB’s No. 1 prospect, at Worcester well into June despite dominating Triple-A pitchers, Durran has been identified by a plethora of pundits as the player most likely to be dealt.

However, despite recently ranking Duran No. 1 on its “MLB trade deadline Big Board 1.0,” The Athletic acknowledged that there are still plenty of reasons for the Red Sox not to follow through on any trades involving the 28-year-old All-Star.

“To be clear: There’s little reason for Boston to even entertain offers for Duran unless the return is substantial. His production has predictably fallen short of his 2024 breakout, but Duran remains a solidly above-average hitter with lots of speed and the ability to play center field.

“Perhaps most importantly, he’s under team control through 2028, making him a player teams can build around. Of course, even with a sudden influx of stud prospects joining the lineup, the Red Sox could continue to build around him, too.”

Or Boston could flip Duran for even more stud prospects. Even though some Red Sox fans may find dealing with the Giants again so soon a bit difficult to stomach.
