WWE Legend Kurt Angle Raves About Mark Kerr Biopic Starring Dwayne Johnson

Kurt Angle recently praised The Smashing Machine, a biopic about MMA legend Mark Kerr. Dwayne Johnson stars as the UFC Hall of Famer in the film.

Angle discussed his relationship with Kerr before entering the world of MMA. The two wrestled each other during their amateur careers.

A24 produced the film, which premiered in theaters on Oct. 3. It features Johnson, Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader, and Bas Rutten, and was directed by Benny Safdie.

Although the film’s box office number fell short of expectations, critics praised the emotional depth and storytelling. It currently holds a 71% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Audiences gave standing ovations during film festival screenings. Many appreciated Kerr’s honesty about his addiction, first seen in his 2002 documentary. That documentary of the same name helped shape the narrative of the film.

Angle, who competed against Kerr many times during their amateur wrestling career, was impressed with the quality of the film. The WWE legend shared his immediate reaction after watching the film.

Angle deeply moved by the film’s storytelling and described it as an inspirational story. He also credited Kerr for pushing him to become a better wrestler when they competed.

“Just watched The Smashing Machine. What a fantastic film that I believe will be considered a classic,” Angle wrote on X. “[Kerr] was ‘The Guy’ I had to beat to qualify for the Olympic Games, which pushed me to transform into a version of myself I never thought I could be. Your story, beyond wrestling, is truly inspirational, my friend.”

Kurt Angle also praised Johnson for his portrayal of Kerr. He believes the film should be recognized for awards.

Johnson underwent a major transformation. He gained more muscle mass and wore prosthetics added realism.

The WWE legend also adjusted his speak patterns to sound more like Kerr. Angle acknowledged that effort he put into his performance.

Johnson and Angle worked together for years in WWE. Their relationship adds more weight to his praise, considering he knew both men very well.

“For Dwayne Johnson to take on such a role and elevate it to another level in his career makes me consider him one of the greatest performers today,” Angle wrote on X. “Watching Dwayne transform into [Kerr] through this film was like deja vu. Now words, just applause.

He added:

“This movie deserves an Oscar, and I believe it will receive the recognition it merits. Well done, brothers.”

Kerr Recalls Heartfelt Gesture by Angle

Kerr and Angle were rivals on the mat, but they also built a meaningful connection through competition.

During an appearance on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, Kerr recalled a personal moment involving Angle. Kerr and his mother watched him win the gold medal together and tried reaching out afterward, but were unsuccessful.

Sadly, Kerr’s mother passed away on Sept. 3, 1996. Days later, Angle sent a hand-written letter addressed to his mother.

Kerr described the letter as deeply emotional and something that is still cherished by his family.

“My mom died September 3rd, I get a letter from [Angle] September 5th. And it’s this beautiful letter. I can’t even talk about it, it’ll make me just ball,” Kerr said. “In the letter, he’s basically like because you made me, Kurt’s biggest obstacle, it helped him win the gold medal because it was an obstacle he never thought he could overcome.”
