There was deafening silence at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night after John Cena tapped out to GUNTHER in his last match. The 19,000-strong crowd then proceeded to boo Triple H when the WWE’s Chief Content Officer walked down to the ring to honor Cena with the rest of the roster.
As seen in the clips below, the crowd also hit Triple H — the man responsible for booking the outcome of WWE matches — with some NSFW chants.
The boos got even louder when Triple H embraced Cena with a hug after playing a tribute video honoring the 17-time WWE world champion.
John Cena Last Match Finish
The ending felt all the more anticlimactic as Cena had never tapped out to a submission hold during his 23-year career, and always lived by his “Never Give Up” catchphrase.
One fan felt that WWE let everyone down by going against one of Cena’s morals.
“The moral of the story is eventually give up.”
Another fan had some harsh words for Triple H over the handling of Cena’s career.
“After everything John Cena has done for the WWE, this is how they decide to end his career… Triple H, u deserve nothing.”
Another fan felt Cena “deserved better” while criticizing HHH’s booking.
GUNTHER Gets Mauled By Irate Fans
The man who made Cena tap out, GUNTHER, was mauled by angry fans as he left the Capital One Arena on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Triple H justified his booking decision of John Cena’s Last Match in the “WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event” post-show broadcast.
“John has said the right thing his entire career that it is about leaving this place better than you found it,” Triple H said, via Vice.
“I think that there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment, but you do what is right for the business. You do what is right for this industry. John has done that his entire career, and I’m going to do that my entire career. What I will do [is] what I believe is right for this business. It just is what it is — It’s part of what we do. That is the role we have chosen.”
Cena kissed the mat, left all his gear in the middle of the ring — including his APL sneakers — before leaving the arena. His parting words were, “It’s been a pleasure serving you all these years, thank you.”
