WWE’s Triple H Fires Back at ‘You F’d Up’ Chants After John Cena Last Match

The man behind WWE’s booking decisions, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, was subject to a lot of vitriol Saturday night after John Cena’s last match ended in an anticlimactic fashion at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

WWE’s Chief Content Officer was hit with loud “You f***ed up” chants when he took the stage during the “Saturday Night’s Main Event” post-show on YouTube.

Triple H had a rather interesting response to the chants.

“I’m actually mildly disappointed. I thought it would be so much louder,” Triple H said, prompting even louder boos from fans who stuck around for the post-show.

‘Right for the Business’

The WWE Hall of Famer justified his booking decision by suggesting that a long-standing tradition was honored Saturday as the retiring pro wrestler went out with his back to the mat — hinting that it was the decision Cena preferred.

“John has said the right thing his entire career that it is about leaving this place better than you found it,” Triple H said of Cena’s intentions, via Vice.

“I think that there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment, but you do what is right for the business. You do what is right for this industry. John has done that his entire career, and I’m going to do that my entire career. What I will do [is] what I believe is right for this business. It just is what it is — It’s part of what we do. That is the role we have chosen.”

John Cena Last Match

While the decision to have Cena tap out in his last match fueled criticism, some also credited WWE for positioning GUNTHER as the new “legend killer” of the WWE. The Austrian wrestler similarly retired Bill Goldberg, another pro wrestling legend, earlier this year and could potentially put out more icons to pasture in the coming years.

GUNTHER had warned fans in the lead-up to John Cena’s last match that they were in for a heartbreak.

“It’s going to be a great day where everybody’s going to tune in and show up and bring all the love for John Cena,” he told Variety on the eve of the match. “But at the end, they’re going to get their hearts broken. So I’m looking forward to that.”

The Austrian acknowledged that it was “a huge honor” to be handpicked as Cena’s final opponent, while promising to do something no other pro wrestler had done in over 23 years — make Cena tap out.

“He has been beaten before many times,” Gunther said. “He had a long career, it’s normal. But he hasn’t been submitted in what, over 20 years? So I think that spices the whole thing up a little bit.”

Cena smiled at the camera before tapping out, which many felt was a symbolic gesture that he no longer had anything left to offer as a pro wrestler.
