The Wyndham Championship doesn’t really have a major place in golf history, recent or otherwise, but the PGA Tour’s trip to North Carolina carries significant implications.
Sedgefield Country Club plays host for the final weekend of the FedEx Cup regular season. For players on the bubble or on the outside looking in, it’s the last chance to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs either on points or by winning outright.
The top 70 will make it through to the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and just about anyone who’s hovering near that line will make the start in Greensboro, N.C., even if it’s not a traditional stop on their calendars. That’s why former Masters champion Adam Scott (No. 85) is in the field, as is former Presidents Cup star Max Homa (No. 106) despite being on baby watch with a pregnant wife at home.
Looking at the betting odds, the bubble boys certainly aren’t getting any sort of big bump with playoff tickets on the line.

Adding to the intrigue of the Wyndham is Sedgefield presents a unique challenge, at least compared to what golf fans have come to expect most weeks on Tour. Names like Aaron Rai, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner and Jim Herman dot the past champions list in just the last five years. None of those players are known for being big hitters, and in some cases, it’s quite the opposite. This sort of course and layout has typically favored players who are accurate off the tee and can ball-strike with the best of them.
Longshots To Watch At 2025 Wyndham Championship
Lucas Glover (35-1): The 2009 U.S. Open winner certainly knows he can win here. The South Carolina native won this tournament in 2023, using an 8-under 62 on Saturday to propel himself past the field. That was part of a great stretch in which Glover even played himself into Ryder Cup contention (not to mention a TGL spot, apparently) with how well he was playing. He’s not quite as hot coming into the 2025 event, but he’s trending in the right direction. Glover finished tied for ninth at the Travelers Championship, earned a top-five finish at the John Deere Classic and then shot three rounds in the 60s on the way to a T-23rd finish at The Open. Glover is one of a handful of major winners in the field this week, alongside the likes of Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth and others.
Pierceson Coody (65-1): The former University of Texas standout is a three-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour and could be right behind Chris Gotterup as the next former amateur phenom to take the next big step. He finished third at the 3M Open last week, and while 65-1 feels maybe a little short for a guy who’s never really contended, he’s so talented that this might be the last best chance to get him at that sort of number in a winnable tournament.
Webb Simpson (125-1): Speaking of former major winners, it’s almost an obligation to mention Simpson at the Wyndham. The man lives on the course and named his daughter after the dang tournament. He stinks now (397th in the world, 173rd in the FedEx Cup), BUT … if there was ever a player to blindly back for no reason, it’s Simpson at the Wyndham. He’s 14-1 at DraftKings Sportsbook to top-10.
