Yankees’ Aaron Boone Downplays Ejection During Loss to Astros

NThe New York Yankees can not seem to get out of their way, and after what was a promising start to the season, they have been one of the worst teams in baseball for nearly two months, and are fighting for the last American League Wild Card spot.

They are 27-34 since June 1, have seen their division lead disappear. Moreover, they are suffering some of the worst losses imaginable in that stretch. It’s been a tough road trip for New York, as they dropped all three series since the beginning of August, and are 2-7 in the last nine contests.

Aaron Boone Ejected for Fifth Time This Season

The tough stretch of games culminated with manager Aaron Boone being tossed from Sunday’s game in the third inning against the Houston Astros. It was his fifth ejection on the season, and he believes it didn’t play a big part in the outcome of the game. Boone is starting to make a habit of drawing an ejection before 2:30 p.m. on random Sundays. Even Aaron Judge returning from the Injured List can’t seem to save the New York Yankees’ season.

Here is what Boone told reporters following the game:

“It was the first couple of innings,” Boone said after the Yankees’ 7-1 loss. “I was on him a lot. That’s over and done with and it is what it is and that isn’t the reason we lost this game.”

The nail in the coffin for home plate umpire Derek Thomas was Aaron Boone chirping at him for a low-called strike on Ryan McMahon, which appeared to be in the strikeout by a healthy margin. Boone’s five ejections this season are suitable for most by any MLB manager. He has also led the American League in ejections each of the past four seasons, and no surprise, he’s the leading candidate to do the same this year.

Yankees Have Had Disastrous Summer

Bleacher Report was quick on the ejection news and provided some analysis on the New York Yankees’ complete implosion this summer:

“On June 12, the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals and moved to a season-high 17 games over .500 (42-25). Since then, they’ve gone 20-31, have fallen to six games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East and are just a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card berth. It’s been a stunning fall from grace for a team with the fourth largest playroll in baseball, and a flurry of moves at the trade deadline—which included adding third baseman Ryan McMahon; relievers David Bednar, Jake Bird and Camilo Doval; utilitymen Amed Rosario and utilityman José Caballero; and outfielder Austin Slater—hasn’t stemmed the tide.”

While Aaron Judge might help the Yankees offensively in their last 44 games of the regular season, each new series the Yankees have is under a large magnifying glass regarding Aaron Boone’s job security.

Although they’ve certainly dealt with a few injuries, so has everyone else, and not reaching the playoffs after advancing to the World Series last season isn’t going to go over easily for the New York press and fans.
