There are some similarities between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. While theyâve played somewhat well, the Mets and Yankees both need similar things at the trade deadline. Both contending teams should be in the market for a starting pitcher.Â
With below-average play in the infield, it’s possible that both teams could also be interested in adding an infielder. For the Yankees, that’ll have to come at third base or second to allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to play the other position, and for the Mets, that’ll likely come at third base to replace Brett Baty, who simply hasn’t been great in Major League Baseball. Baty has torn things up in Triple-A, but seemingly can’t figure things out at the highest level.Â
When searching for potential trade options, CBS Sports recently predicted that the Yankees and Mets could get into a bit of a bidding war for Ryan McMahon, who they named the top trade target on the market this summer.Â
âThere’s no telling what awaits when it comes to the Rockies and the deadline, but McMahon is an interesting and (to an extent) self-contradicting player. At first blush, part of his appeal is his consistency: he’s on pace to extend his streak to five consecutive seasons with an OPS+ between 93 and 98. That, plus his quality defense at third base, would be enough to make him a good addition to most teams…Â
âI would like to see what McMahon’s game looks like when he’s spending the season in more normal hitting environments. Will I get that wish? Again, who knows. McMahon is on the wrong side of 30 and has just two more seasons remaining on his contract, suggesting the Rockies would be wise to act now, lest they miss out on their window to get a quality return. Potential landing spots: Red Sox, Yankees, Mets,â they wrote.
What Are the Mets Keen on Landing This Deadline?
According to recent reports, the New York Mets might not be looking to add a third baseman. The Athletic reveals that the Mets are expected to be interested in finding a center fielder and getting some help from starting pitching. Similar to the New York Yankees on the starting pitching front, there will be some competition on that end, too.Â
âThe Mets are monitoring the market for help in center field and the bullpen, league sources said. Speculatively, other possible and more expensive targets such as a frontline starter may emerge,â they wrote.
Could the Rockies Trade Ryan McMahon?
The New York Yankees have been linked to McMahon multiple times over the past few years. McMahon, who is playing for a brutal Colorado Rockies team, could be somebody who gets traded, depending on how things happen over the next few weeks.
It’s guaranteed that the Rockies are expected to sell, but if they don’t want to move on from McMahon, it’s possible they won’t. It wouldn’t make much sense considering heâs set to hit free agency in two seasons, and his value will likely only continue to diminish as he’s already 30 years old, but the Rockies have done some very questionable things, so it isn’t like the New York Mets and Yankees are guaranteed to have a chance to trade for him.
