The New York Yankees have had a quiet offseason, but the team could make a stunning move.
New York has yet to make an addition to the roster, while the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Tampa Bay Rays have all done so. The pressure is on the Yankees to compete with their division rivals, but New York could actually subtract from its roster.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on Thursday that the Yankees are listening to trade offers on Jazz Chisholm Jr., amid interest from other teams.
“A second baseman is going to move. Maybe multiple. There is too much interest in Ketel Marte, Brendan Donovan and Brandon Lowe for a deal not to be consummated. It’s not just them, either. Jake Cronenworth is available. The Yankees have listened on Jazz Chisholm Jr.,” Passan wrote.
The Yankees trading away Chisholm would be a stunning move, as he’s an impact player for New York. He’s also the starting second baseman for New York, so if the Yankees do move him, New York would need to make a major move to replace him.
Chisholm is under team control through 2026 and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Last season with the Yankees, he hit .242 with 31 home runs and 80 RBIs and is a two-time MLB All-Star.
Yankees GM Hints at Trading Chisholm
Although Chisholm has been an impact player for the Yankees, New York could look to trade him this offseason.
At the Winter Meetings, Cashman was asked about Chisholm and said he’s a key part of the solution. But, Cashman hinted that the team could be open to trading him as he said the team has to be open-minded.
“He is somebody who I think is currently part of the solution, someone who has made us better by getting him two deadlines ago and giving us athleticism,” Cashman said. “He’s above average. He’s an All-Star second baseman. Great defense. Steals bags. Power. All that stuff. So he’s been a good get. But at the same time, the collection of all, whether it’s third base, second base, first base, catcher, center field … they’re all left-handed. A
“Again, we’ll be open-minded. My default is that these are all individually good players. We acquired them for a reason — because we wanted them — and they have been productive with us. … But the job is to be open-minded to anything, everything, regardless.”
Chisholm won the Silver Slugger Award in 2025.
Chisholm Will Get a Raise in Arbitration
New York could look to trade Chisholm due to the fact that he’s in line for a raise.
The star infielder is in the final year of team control, and MLBTradeRumors predicts Chisholm will earn $10.2 million in arbitration this season.
The Yankees have hinted at not having as much money this offseason to spend, which could also play a role in him being traded.
“Would it be ideal if I went down (in payroll)?” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said. “Of course. But does that mean that’s going to happen? Of course not.”
The Yankees had the fourth-highest payroll in 2025.
