Yankees’ Devin Williams Gets Honest About Brutal Inning in Loss to Blue Jays

Devin Williams blew up at the worst possible time for the New York Yankees.

After New York rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to tie the game, Williams aired his frustrations after surrendering two runs in a brutal inning in the Yankees’ 11-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

The Yankees dropped their third straight north of the border, and lost for the 13th time in their past 19 games and fell into a tie atop the American League East with the Blue Jays. The clubs lead the second-place Tampa Bay Rays by just a half-game.

What Happened To Devin Williams on Wednesday?

Williams allowed his first earned runs in 30 days and was wild by walking two, one intentionally, and allowing the go-ahead run to score on a wild pitch then gave up Addison Barger’s RBI single that made it 11-9.

“I thought I made some pretty-solid pitches,” Williams said. “Barger hit a pitch that was out of the zone.”

Williams washed his hands of manager Aaron Boone’s decision to walk Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero, saying “that’s not my decision.” Guerrero scored on Barger’s single to left field that put Toronto up by two.

Williams took the blame for the wild pitch, which scored George Springer with the go-ahead run when he bounced a changeup that eluded Yankees catcher Ben Rice.

“I gotta make a better pitch there,” Williams said “It wasn’t the easiest one to block for Ben. I’ve gotta make a better pitch.”

But Williams also was frustrated by a line of questioning after the game, where he was asked “his take” on how he feels about the Yankees’ recent downturn.

“I think it’s probably the same as everyone else’s. We’re not playing well,” Williams said. “You go through stretches good and bad, and we’re in a bad one now.”

What Happened To The Yankees?

That Williams was even in the game at all Wednesday would have been shocking about 90 minutes earlier, since the Blue Jays tattooed New York starter Will Warren.

Warren had his worst outing of the season — a remarkable feat considering he allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings at Dodger Stadium on May 31 — by surrendering eight runs and 10 hits while walking four in four innings and allowing a pair of first-inning homers.

Toronto exploded out of the gate for seven runs in the first inning, five of which came home before Warren had even recorded an out. Barger’s homer made it 5-0, and Davis Schneider hit the first of his two home runs to give the Jays a 7-0 advantage.

“They did a good job putting the ball in play,” Warren said. “I didn’t execute some pitches, and guys were on base and they made me pay for it.”

Though New York rallied to even the game — Giancarlo Stanton launched his first homer of the season, and Aaron Judge hit his 31st home run of the year in the top of the eighth that tied it at 9 — the Bombers could not mount another comeback against Jays closer Jeff Hoffman.

The Yankees have been outscored 31-18 in their three losses at Rogers Centre and are 1-9 in their past 10 games decided by two runs or fewer.
