The New York Yankees are in the middle of an intense postseason battle, but one of their so-called “state partners” just switched sides—and fans in the Bronx aren’t letting it slide.
On Friday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills stirred controversy by wishing the Toronto Blue Jays good luck in the American League Division Series, just one day before the Jays faced the Yankees. The post read: “Good luck to our friends up north,” alongside a Blue Jays logo—and within minutes, the backlash flooded in.
“Yeah, don’t call yourself a New York team again,” one fan fired back on X. Another added, “Can’t believe New York taxpayers [are paying] $600 million for your new stadium. If you love Toronto so much, please move there and let the Canadians pay your bills.”
Even Bills heiress and tennis star Jessica Pegula was confused. “Ohhh???” she replied directly to the team’s post—a response echoed by fellow player Eugenie Bouchard, who joked, “I second this. Ohhh???”
Bronx vs. Buffalo: A State Divided
The Yankees-Blue Jays rivalry is fierce enough, but the Bills’ sudden allegiance to Toronto turned it into a full-blown civil war between New York’s biggest fan bases.
“This is blasphemous,” wrote Gary Sheffield Jr., son of the former Yankees slugger. “Shouldn’t we root for teams that actually play in the great state of New York?” said another.
Others pointed out the irony that the Bills—the only NFL team that actually plays in New York State—would throw their support behind a Canadian franchise. “I know tons of Bills fans being from upstate [New York], none of them are [Blue Jays] over Yankees fans. Not one,” one user wrote.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Blue Jays’ social media team gleefully replied with a photo of quarterback Josh Allen wearing a Jays jersey during a 2023 visit to Rogers Centre. The post was captioned, “Blue Jays Mafia. You know ball.”
The Blue Jays, who edged the Yankees for the AL East crown via tiebreaker, will host the first two games of the Division Series at Rogers Centre—the same ballpark where Allen once took batting practice in Toronto gear. That photo resurfaced quickly, amplifying the outrage.
New York Loyalty Tested
Buffalo sits nearly six hours from Midtown Manhattan, and the team continues fighting for inclusion in New York’s sports conversation. The city’s traditional lineup—Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants, Jets, and Rangers—often overshadows Buffalo’s NFL powerhouse.
But after this week, Yankees fans may keep it that way.
“Bills have lost their card as a New York team after this monstrosity,” one user posted.
For Yankees supporters, the timing couldn’t be worse. The team is battling to advance to the ALCS, while their supposed in-state peers are rooting for the enemy. Even those who appreciate the Bills’ success were baffled.
“No way a New York team is rooting against a New York team,” one fan summarized.
As the Yankees prepare for Game 1 in Toronto, the city’s baseball fans are uniting—not against Boston, but against Buffalo.
