The New York Yankees enter the trade deadline looking to improve their roster, and multiple players will be available for them to pursue. If the Yankees want to make a splash, not only will it be expensive, but it might be tough for them to do so due to their below-average farm system.Â
Unfortunately for Yankees fans, they may not want to hear the name the team has been most recently linked to. The Yankees have reportedly shown interest in Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was with the team a few years ago. In Kiner-Falefaâs defense, there wasn’t much that he couldâve done differently. The Yankees put him in a position where he couldn’t succeed, and as a result, plenty went wrong.Â
However, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the Yankees love the idea of potentially bringing him back and putting him in a different position this time around.Â
âStill, he shouldnât be the bar the Yankees are hoping to clear. USA Todayâs Bob Nightengale reported the Yankees have been keeping an eye on the Pittsburgh Piratesâ Isiah Kiner-Falefa for a possible reunion. They love the makeup of Kiner-Falefa, who got a bad rap in the Bronx when he was forced into everyday shortstop action before he was ready. But the Yankees should aim higher and look to improve with an everyday player rather than a role player,â he wrote.
There were reports earlier in the year that the Pittsburgh Pirates could make anyone on their roster available, including Paul Skenes. However, those were quickly shut down.Â
Pirates Predicted to Have a Fire Sale
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the New York Yankees will likely have an opportunity to trade for anyone else on their roster outside of him and Oneil Cruz.Â
âThe Pittsburgh Pirates are flatly rebuking all interest from teams wanting to engage in trade talks for ace Paul Skenes, but will listen to offers on every other player but him and outfielder Oneil Cruz.
âTwo intriguing players are third baseman KeâBryan Hayes and outfielder Bryan Reynolds. They were each expected to become cornerstone pieces of the franchise and both have struggled, with the Pirates expected to put them on the market at the trade deadline. Reynolds is in the third year of an eight-year, $106.75 million deal, the largest in club history. Hayes is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $70 million extension,â Nightengale wrote.
What Will the Yankees Be Looking To Acquire at the Trade Deadline?
Among what the New York Yankees could pursue at the trade deadline, many have suggested that they’ll be interested in adding a few arms.Â
However, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the pitching aspect will only be addressed in the bullpen area. The Yankees feel confident in their starting rotation, and rightfully so, as they have thrown the baseball at an above-average level to start the first half of the season.Â
“They donât need to start pitching at the moment,” Heyman said Monday on MLB Network. “Obviously, things can change. But thatâs a great position to be in.”
It’s very possible that things change prior to the deadline, and of course, every contending team could use arms, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Yankees add a starter depending on how things go over the next month.
