The New York Yankees are off to a relatively slow offseason, but there is still time to make meaningful additions and bring back players who were on the Yankees’ roster in 2025. The big contract decisions New York is awaiting are those of Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, and Luke Weaver.
At this juncture, the Yankees would be happy to re-sign two out of those three players, as Bellinger’s market is considered to be very competitive, and other teams might throw more money at Goldschmidt on a one-year deal. So, where does that leave reliever Luke Weaver, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2025?

New Report Indicates Mutual Interest Between Yankees and Luke Weaver
According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, the New York Yankees and reliever Luke Weaver have expressed “mutual interest” in a potential return. Kirschner notes that Weaver is weighing his other options and seeking a multi-year extension, and up to 10 MLB teams have already checked in on Weaver this winter.
Luke Weaver had a breakout season in 2025. He posted a 3.62 ERA over 64.2 innings, recorded eight saves, and struck out 72 batters. Devin Williams is now on the New York Mets, but Williams and Weaver split time as the Yankees’ closer down the stretch of the 2025 season.

After losing Devin Williams, it almost feels imperative that the Yankees reach a deal with Luke Weaver, or else their bullpen will be extremely thin.
Weaver’s 2024 season was just as good, as he posted a 2.89 ERA across 84 innings. He had never recorded an MLB save in his career before 2024. Weaver is a 10-year MLB veteran, but the Yankees are the first organization to use him purely as a bullpen arm, and it paid off to their benefit.

Luke Weaver’s Journey in MLB
Luke Weaver is a total journeyman across MLB. He came up with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016 as a starter, but he was moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019. He then bounced around from several teams from 2020-2023.
The New York Yankees have served as Weaver’s seventh MLB organization, and that number could grow if he signs elsewhere.
However, just because Weaver is a late bloomer doesn’t diminish his value at all. The 32-year-old reliever’s market value, according to Spotrac, is worth two years, $19.8 million.
Relievers across MLB have been very quick to ink deals, and Weaver may be the best option out of the bullpen on the market at the moment, which puts even more pressure on the Yankees to get a deal done.
Weaver has a career 4.74 ERA over 723 innings, but posted a 3.22 ERA over 129 games pitched with the Yankees from 2023-2025.
