The New York Yankees have a decision to make in the coming months with Jazz Chisholm Jr. In 2024, New York made the blockbuster move for the former Miami Marlins star in an attempt to bolster their infield.
Nonetheless, Chisholm is set to become a free agent in 2027, and the Yankees need to decide whether they want to keep the 27-year-old long-term or let him walk after next season.
With the offseason in full swing, FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray shared the latest regarding Chisholm’s future in New York. Murray believes that the infielder has shown to be a key player for the Yankees and someone they should look to keep.
“If I was them, I would definitely explore [a contract extension],” Murray said during a November 20 appearance on “Foul Territory.” “He was an all-star last year. He’s a tremendous player. He’s really been a great fit in New York, and you talk to people around that team, and they love him. [Yankees general manager] Brian Cashman did not shoot down the idea of a possible extension when he was asked about it at the GM meetings or on a conference call at the GM meetings.”
Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. Predicted to Head to Free Agency
While Murray outlines why the Yankees should consider extending Chisholm and keeping him a part of the Aaron Judge-era core, he believes the Yankees player will ultimately test free agency. Once Chisholm hits the open market, that’s when it will be up to the player whether he wants to find common ground with the Yankees or head elsewhere.
“[The Yankees] typically don’t extend players before they reach free agency because Cashman prefers his players to reach the market so they can establish their values there,” Murray added. “He could be an exception to the rule. That being said, he’s a year away from free agency.
“He had a great year this year. If he has another great year next year, he can really just turn that into a very strong contract in free agency. My guess is they poke around, see what it’s going to take. But my feel is it’s probably unlikely that he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season.”
Jazz Chisholm Jr. Has Been as Advertised in New York
When Chisholm arrived in the Bronx, he delivered exactly what the team hoped for. He hit 11 homers, drove in 23 runs, and stole 18 bases over 46 games for the Yankees that year after arriving from Miami.
He was even stronger in 2025, slashing .242/.332/.481 with 31 homers, 80 RBIs, 31 stolen bases, 15 doubles, and 75 runs across 130 games, posting his highest wins above replacement in his career to date at 4.2.
This offseason, the Yankees allowed for Trent Grisham, who would eventually accept his qualifying offer, and Cody Bellinger to test free agency. While Grisham will be back in New York next season, it will be interesting to see if Bellinger decides to stay in the Bronx or head elsewhere.
With how the Yankees have handled Bellinger, it could be a preview of how Chisholm plays out after next season and how much they could be willing to pay their infielder.
