Yankees GM Brian Cashman Sends Strong Message on Jasson Dominguez at Winter Meetings

To many, the New York Yankees have a hole in the outfield that needs to be filled. But to Brian Cashman, there still is a contingency plan if they don’t sign either Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.

The Yankees general manager floated the idea of Jasson Dominguez playing as the team’s everyday left fielder in 2026 if they can’t make a deal to sign or acquire an outfielder before spring training.

Dominguez, the 5-9, 218-pound prospect affectionally referred to as “The Martian” for his otherworldly skills, is still weeks away from his 23rd birthday and is coming off the best of his three big-league seasons. He slashed .257/.331/.388 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs plus 23 stolen bases over 429 plate appearances in 2025.

Brian Cashman: Jasson Dominguez Would Be ‘Our Left Fielder’ If The Season Started Today

Dominguez has battled injuries and inconsistency and is having a horrible season in winter ball, posting just a .568 OPS in 11 games in the Dominican Republic.

But Cashman has enough confidence in Dominguez to declare him the team’s potential starter in left field — though not without a competition against arguably the Yankees’ most intriguing prospect.

“If spring training started today, he’d be our left fielder,” general manager Brian Cashman told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “He’d be in a competition; Spencer Jones would try to take his shot at the title. But I think it’s easy to think that by default — since Domínguez was here last year, where he’s at in his progression — he would be the odds-on favorite.”

Yankees fans may forget Dominguez, or have their confidence in him waning. But the Yankees are still backing their guy, at least publicly.

“Obviously we like and we’re very high on Domínguez and what he brings to the table,” Cashman said. “I think there’s a lot more to come.”

Aaron Boone: ‘There’s Still A Long Ways’ For Jasson Dominguez To Go

Brian Cashman isn’t the only member of the Yankees to publicly vote his support for Dominguez potentially being an everyday player in their outfield — even though there is still another level for him to get to.

“There’s still a long ways to go in that improvement,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said to MLB.com. “It’s still fairly new for him.

“His athleticism is a real calling card for him, as far as his speed and arm strength and things like that, and you hope that eventually wins the day and eventually gets him to the point where, ‘Wow, he’s getting really good out there.’ He’s still got a lot of development to do in that regard.”

Yankees fans have been hearing about Dominguez since the club signed him as a 16-year-old in 2019, and they are waiting for the superstar-caliber player to emerge. Boone told Hoch there have been tangible impediments to his development, specifically the COVID-19-canceled 2020 minor-league season and his torn UCL sustained in 2023.

But Boone cautioned Yankees fans to not read too much into his struggles in the Dominican Republic.

“It was a small sample down there,” Boone said “But I think just going down there and playing in that environment and getting some at-bats, continuing to play … I think it’s good to go do that.”
